Last season, Jacob helped lead Vallivue as a key contributor at the point as they won a lot of games last year and are beginning to gear up for this year. In the upcoming season, Martinez will look to help lead the Falcons as they attempt to make a run for their district title and eventually the goal of making a deep run at the state tournament. Continue reading for a breakdown of Jacob’s game on both sides of the ball ahead of the 2020-21 season.
Defense: Jacob is a solid defender for the Falcons. He pressures the ball well and has long arms for his height that he always uses to dig in the post or when he is playing help-side. He constantly makes plays on the ball without committing lots of fouls and he is able to keep his man in front no matter who he is tasked with guarding. He does a great job of reading passing lanes and he jumps them for steals that lead to fast breaks. Against bigs, Martinez likes to front and does his best to work his way around taller post players. He does not back down and works his hardest to push them out of the paint. As a rebounder, Jacob likes to crash the glass and collects a couple of rebounds per game.
Offense: Martinez is a great offensive guard for Vallivue. He has a great looking shot from outside that he knocks down consistently. He is selective in the shots he takes but he shoots a great percentage and likes to make sure he is open before he shoots. Jacob does well in the open floor and likes to finish at the rim with either hand in transition. He is quick enough to get by his defender and he can attack the rim at will. Martinez also mixes in a nice mid-range jumper from time to time as well. As a passer, Jacob does a great job of finding the open man and getting them the ball in positions to score. He is a pass first guard that loves the art of the assist.
Overall: Altogether, Martinez is an excellent player for the Falcons. On defense, Martinez has the ability to guard anyone on a roster and he is a solid defender. On offense, Martinez can knock down any shot and he loves to look for his teammates for easy buckets. Martinez would make a great guard at the next level.
