Outside of the obvious names in this class, there are some guards that have the heir on intrigue hanging over them. The Columbus City League is known to have, if nothing else, consistent guard play and many of those players have come from nowhere because schools were too hesitant to sign them because there were too many questions around them. Whether the intrigue comes from wondering how they will perform this season or if they will perform this season, these players have coaches and scouts alike wondering about them.
Shamarion Rogers- Linden McKinley: After a solid season on the Gridiron for the Panthers, Rogers will focus on the hardwood and getting back to a Columbus City League championship game. Rogers is surrounded by a blazing fast point guard in LB Towns and with the bonafide scoring machine Chance Groce Chance Groce 6'5" | SF Linden McKinley | 2021 State OH gone, the intrigue with Rogers revolves around if he will be able to duplicate his success from last season. Shamarion averaged close to 14 points per game and he will more than likely need to raise that this upcoming season. Can Rogers score enough to replace the production of Groce and help Towns’ assists numbers rise? He is capable, and if that happens then expect to see the Panthers back in the Columbus City League title game once again.
Javion Williams- Briggs: Williams has every tool in his offensive arsenal, he can catch-and-shoot as well as get his shot on his own. Williams can create his own shot off the dribble, he can drive and finish at the basket with ease and his mid-range game is impeccable. Reading that, you may wonder, “what’s the intrigue with this kid?” but that’s an easy answer because the only intrigue around Williams is whether or not he can keep his grades up to stay on the court. He has struggled in the past with his grades but this season he expects things to be different for him, with a renewed focus and a dominant summer. Williams looks to keep Briggs competitive and even win some of those close games they lost last season, and if he can stay on the court then the Bruins can ruin some teams’ season.
Dorsin Butler- Marion Franklin: Butler is as gritty as it gets in the Columbus City League, scrapping and clawing for every basket he gets, no matter how athletic he looks in the process. Butler’s 16.8 points per game last season was good enough for fourth in the Columbus City League south but scouts and coaches want to see if he can translate those numbers into wins. The Red Devils struggled in the win category last season, granted it is not all Butler’s fault but people at the next level are intrigued with whether Butler is strictly a numbers guy or can he sacrifice those numbers for more wins. He is capable of leading his team to more victories and if he can, then the college letters will stream in for Butler this season.
Keshawn Harris Keshawn Harris 6'0" | PG Independence | 2021 State OH – Independence: Possibly the best defensive guard in the Columbus City League, Harris is one of the most intriguing prospects in this class at the guard spot because even though he broke out last season, can he carry his Sixer squad by himself and make them successful. Last season, Harris had senior record-breaker Andre Trent to lean on in those rare moments where he did not have it going and this season he won’t have that backcourt mate. Can Harris get the ball to his teammates in good enough spots for them to score easily? That is how he will be able to make his teammates better, Harris will have to shoulder the load for the Sixers this season and coaches will be intrigued to watch him play this season.
Shemar Watson- Northland: The most intriguing thing heading into the season for the Vikings’ Watson is if he can become the third scorer alongside Makhale Massey Makhale Massey 6'3" | SG Northland | 2021 State OH and Robert Dorsey Robert Dorsey 5'10" | PG Northland | 2022 State OH III. Watson will be responsible for not only scoring the ball but with the ball in his hand he is also responsible for making sure Massey and Dorsey get their touches and points. Watson will control the offense and many schools are intrigued on how he will handle that kind of pressure. The rich point guard history at Northland gives this young man a different edge heading into the season as many Northland greats have been in his ears giving him guidance and his coach Sean Taylor knowing how to play to players strengths.
