Hilmer, like older brother Jake, is one of the state’s best passers. He dished out 31 more assists than any other player in the state last season.
2.) Jack Franey Jack Franey 5'7" | PG Martensdale-St. Marys | 2021 State IA (Martensdale-St. Mary’s, 2021) – 6.7 assists per game
The straw that stirs the drink for one of 1A’s most potent offensive attacks, Franey does a great job protecting the ball as well, posting a better than 3-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio last year.
3.) Taurice Grant Taurice Grant 5'11" | PG Meskwaki Settlement School | 2021 State IA (Meskwaki Settlement, 2021) – 6.6 assists per game
Grant stuffs the stat sheet for the Warriors, putting up 15.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, 6.6 assists and 5.1 steals a game.
4.) Kobe Risse Kobe Risse 6'0" | PG Wapsie Valley | 2021 State IA (Wapsie Valley, 2021) – 6.1 assists per game
Risse shares ball-handling responsibilities with Blayde Bellis Blayde Bellis 5'9" | PG Wapsie Valley | 2021 State IA , giving the Warriors a fantastic backcourt that can really share the rock. He turned the ball over just 2.1 times a game last year for the 1A state champions.
5.) Max Burt Max Burt 6'0" | PG Newman Catholic | 2023 State IA (Newman Catholic, 2023) – 6.0 assists per game
Burt is one of the best passers in the state in the 2023 class, leading all freshmen with 6.0 assists a game last year.
6.) Leo Dodd (Janesville, 2022) – 5.8 assists per game
Capable of making an impact on both ends of the floor, Dodd also ranked among the state leaders in steals, swiping 3.1 a game.
7.) Maddox Griffin Maddox Griffin 6'1" | PG Wapello | 2022 State IA (Wapello, 2022) – 5.7 assists per game
Another stat sheet stuffer, Griffin averaged 16.2 points and 6.5 rebounds in addition to his passing prowess. He’ll be the focal point for an Indians team that should be improved.
8.) Malachi Johnson Malachi Johnson 5'9" | PG Ankeny Christian Academy | 2022 State IA (Ankeny Christian, 2022) – 5.5 assists per game
Johnson does a great job limiting turnovers, committing just 1.6 of them a game last season. He’s not much of a scoring threat, but he does a great job getting others involved for one of 1A’s most powerful offenses.
9.) Taydem Arguello (Morningstar Academy, 2023) – 5.4 assists per game
Arguello averaged just 3.1 points a game, but thrives getting others involved.
10.) William Kiburis (Gladbrook-Reinbeck, 2023) – 5.3 assists per game
Another talented freshman guard on this list, Kiburis also averaged nearly 15 points a game for the Rebels.
