Kegan averaged 18.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, four assists, three steals, and three blocks a game last year for Class A Sleepy Eye, a three win team. Yes Kegan has had to do everything at times and often it wasn’t enough. He’s broken a school record for threes made, he’s had double figure assists, a double figure block game, and has totaled triple doubles. Kegan has handled the ball and then ran back the other way and defended centers.
How is Kegan getting ready for next year? What are his goals? Simple answers for a small school talent.
“I’ve been playing football for my school and then after practice I’ll go and shoot and workout for basketball as well,” Kegan said. “My goal is to be able to play my senior season and stay healthy through the whole thing.”
And what about improving on those three wins?
“We should be a top five team in the conference this year, we lost only two seniors so we have a lot coming back for us this year!”
Experience can go a long way in Class A basketball. So can size. Kegan has those things and he puts them to great use.
“I can handle the ball well for my size, I can see plays develop before they happen. I can shoot it well from mid-range to three.”
These are the type of things that have helped make Kegan a top 50 prospect in Minnesota’s senior class. Kegan is very grateful for the help of others, like Minnesota Rise. He credits Prep Hoops for some of that help as well.
“The recognition from you and from the other guys at prep hoops has helped my recruiting a lot this summer,” Kegan said. “If it wasn’t for you guys I don’t think I’d be getting the recognition that I am!”
While it’s nice of Kegan to say that, the biggest thing that happened was that Kegan played extremely well. And schools followed.
“Some of the main schools I’ve (was) hearing from are Bemidji State, Southwest Minnesota State, Bethany Lutheran College, St Johns, St Olaf, and NDSCS,” Kegan said.
That was before Kegan selected SMSU late last week.
“First off I’d like to thank the Minnesota Rise program for everything they have done for me. Without them I wouldn’t be in the position I am today.
“I’m blessed and honored to announce my commitment to Southwest Minnesota State University. Thank you to coach (Brad) Bigler and the rest of the Mustangs staff for this opportunity,” Kegan said.
