This summer I stepped towards Jace after a game to take a photo and offer a “nice game Jace”. In doing so my first thought was “he’s looking bigger”. That was an understatement. Bigelow has put on about 25 pounds of good weight, grew an inch to 6-foot-4, and is going to be one of the best players in Section 1AAA coming into the season. It’s been a good off-season of work. Now Bigelow has brought that work ethic into the fall.
“I have been doing a lot of lifting to build my body,” Bigelow said. “Also, I’m playing football (wide receiver) and just doing basketball workouts when I have free time.”
Colleges have taken notice especially at the division three level. What’s been the difference lately?
“I think I have always had the work ethic, but just continuing to work, even when you feel like no one notices,” Bigelow said. “I’m hearing a lot from St. John’s and most of the MIAC and WIAC schools.”
Bieglow averaged 17.7 points and 4.2 rebounds per game as a junior, but has the ability to up that in a big way as a senior. Bigelow is a part of a quality Kasson-Mantorville backcourt that won 11 games last season. Expectations are higher this winter.
“Our team is looking way better than last year,” Jace said. “Everyone that is going to play will already have varsity experience and I feel like some kids are ready to make big jumps. Our team goal would be to win at least 3/4 of our games.”
With 1,048 career points Bigelow is the third leading scorer in the history of Kasson-Mantorville basketball and pushing.
“My goals for this upcoming season are to break my school’s scoring record and just show college coaches I transformed into a 3-level scorer.”
Coach Nick Pocius said the following about Jace:
“(Jace is) a strong offensive player that can use both hands to attack the rim. (He’s a) creative finisher around the rim that can also shoot the three. Has a knack to find the ball on the defensive end off of the rebound as well by invading passing lanes. Has a high motor and a strong desire to win.”
