Defending Central Jersey Group 1 champion Burlington City has opted out of the winter season, creating a void on the top team in the sectioncr. Some of the top players in the group changed schools, including Kunga Tsering Kunga Tsering 6'6" | SF Woodstock Academy | 2022 State NLG heading for state power Roselle Catholic. Even with some of the defections, the section is still filled with good lead guard play who will make an impact at the next level. Here are the top point guards in Group 1 this season.
Tazir Cantey Tazir Cantey 6'0" | PG Eastern | 2021 State NJ , 6’0 Lindenwold 2021
Cantey may be on the move to Eastern, but his ability to score the ball in bunches makes him eligible for this list. The 6’0 guard is explosive off the bounce and knows how to finish around the basket. Cantey is more than just a driver as he has a nice release on his jumper and can get hot from distance in a hurry. He is an underrated passer and plays with quick hands on the defensive end. Cantey currently holds three D2 offers, but that list should grow after a strong senior season.
Spencer Joyner Spencer Joyner 6'4" | PG Arts | 2023 State NJ , 6’4 Arts 2023
Joyner had a strong freshman season, but should be one of the top play-makers in Essex County in 2020-21. The University transfer has a smooth handle and is able to beat his defender off the dribble. Joyner is a good finisher around the basket and does not mind contact around the basket. He uses his size to see over his defender and can ripe down rebounds on both ends. Joyner should be one of the players to watch in Group 1 as he leads Arts this season.
Quadir Harrell Quadir Harrell 5'10" | PG Bound Brook | 2022 State NJ , Bound Brook 2022
Harrell was one of the top guards in Group 1 last season and should be again for the Crusaders. He is dynamic off the bounce and knows how to finish through contact. Harrell has a quick release on his jumper and can bury triples in bunches when he gets hot. He is unafraid to take charges on the defensive end and makes smart decisions with the basketball. Harrell is one of the toughest guards in the 2022 class and should lead Bound Brook to a strong 2020-21 season.
Jamar Belfield Jamar Belfield 5'10" | PG Paterson Charter | 2022 State NJ , 5’10 Paterson Charter 2022
The Lions had a historic 2020-21 season as they won 27 games and took home a sectional title, but they need Belfield to take a step up this season. The 5’10 guard makes good decisions with the ball in his hands as he rarely forces the issue. Belfield has a nice handle and is capable of finishing around the rim. He moves his feet well on the defensive end and has quick hands. Paterson Charter has the potential to have a good year in 2020-21 with Belfield back to run the offense.
Chris Ross Chris Ross 5'9" | PG Wallkill Valley | 2023 State NJ , 5’9 Wallkill Valley 2023
Ross is an explosive athlete who should be a highlight waiting to happen. The 5’9 guard is lightning quick with the ball in his hands and can finish above the rim. Ross is more than just a dunker as he has a good layup package and is unafraid of contact. He is a pest on the defensive end and knows how to push the pace with the ball in his hands. Ross is ready to have a breakout season for Wallkill Valley this season.
