Lake Creek has a team full of shooters and normally find the bulk of their success on the perimeter. The inside presence of Chris Wiseman and Paul Oyewale for this year’s Langham Creek Lobos, makes them a team that is usually successful when they dominate the paint. However, the Lobos will have some perimeter help to maintain a bit more balance with JJ Renchie, Makale Mingo and the insertion of Bryant Barnes, who is coming back from injury. They will have their hands full, however, trying to combat the guard duo of Hudson Boyd and Jordan Fitch from Lake Creek, who has announced themselves as a lethal 1 – 2 punch for the Lions. Let’s take a look at how things played out.
First Quarter
Both teams started the game playing a half court zone defensive. Both teams have experienced players that are poised so there were not many turnovers nor many rushed shot attempts. Both teams ran through their half court sets pretty cleanly but neither was efficient shooting the ball from the perimeter. However, Jordan Fitch from Lake Creek, was able to knock down both of his attempts from beyond the arc to jump start Lake Creek’s scoring. The two bruisers inside for Langham Creek, Chris Wiseman and Paul Oyewale, pounded the boards and was able to cash in with some put-backs as well as some free throws. Both finish the quarter with 6 points apiece.
End of the 1st Score
Langham Creek HS – 14
Lake Creek HS – 11
Second Quarter
Hudson Boyd led the Lions in scoring in the second quarter with 7 points. The problem was, he was their only scorer in the second quarter. The Lions struggled from the field as they were getting clean looks from the perimeter, but nothing was going in. Fortunately, for Lake Creek, Langham was unable to fully capitalize on the Lions’ shooting slump. But a theme began to emerge to be prominent. If there was a rebound to be had, the inside duo of Chris Wiseman and Paul Oyewale was likely to come up with it. This made things even more difficult for the Lake Creek Lions, as they were hardly ever able to get multiple possessions on their offensive trips.
End of the 2nd Score
Langham Creek HS – 22
Lake Creek HS – 18
Third Quarter
As the second half began, it was obvious, Langham Creek would not deviate from their methodical approach to this game. It was simple. Rotate the ball at the top of the Lake Creek zone until there was a passing lane to the middle. Get the ball to Chris Wiseman at his high post position and let him make good decisions. Once a shot goes up, REBOUND. This was a formula that worked pretty well for the Lobos in the first half. And although the never had a sizable lead, they never gave up the lead they had regardless of the amount. The lid did come off of the basket for Lake Creek in this quarter though, with Jordan Fitch and Hudson Boyd each knocking down two 3-pointers. This backcourt duo accounted for all of Lake Creek’s 16 points in the quarter.
End of the 3rd Score
Langham Creek HS – 40
Lake Creek HS – 34
Forth Quarter
The forth quarter showed the Lake Creek Lions extending their defense in an attempt to speed up the Lobos and force them into mistakes. This worked in their favor early in the quarter as they were finally able to find a way to create multiple possessions and get more shots. Unfortunately for the Lions, they were never able to figure out how to get other players, aside from Jordan Fitch and Hudson Boyd, to contribute offensively. The two accounted for 41 of the Lions’ 44 total points in the game. Meanwhile, it was business as usual for the Lobos. They were crashing the boards, getting shots in the paint and knocking down their free throws. All of this resulted in a 12 point win for Langham Creek as their inside presence proved to just be too much for the Lake Creek Lions.
End of the Game Score
Langham Creek HS – 56
Lake Creek HS – 44
