Continue ReadingIt was another early season matchup between two 6A teams that have been projected to have good seasons, when the Fort Bend Travis Tigers played host to Cy Creek Cougars. Both teams contain players that are on the D1 radar and even more players that will eventually play college ball at various levels. Normally, one would say that this would be a good litmus test for both teams, however, FB Travis was without Drew Lutcher Drew Lutcher 6'5" | SF Wylie | 2021 State TX and some of their other pivotal players that are still in football, and Cy Creek was without Braylon Haynes Braylon Haynes 6'3" | 180 lbs | PG Cypress Creek | 2021 TX and Jaylen Wysinger Jaylen Wysinger 6'2" | CG St. Pius X | 2021 State TX . Going into the game, FB Travis would need to lean heavily on Mekhi Mcintyre (2021) and DJ Richards (2021) would be the go-to guy for Cy Creek. Let’s take a look at how things played out.
First Quarter
The first quarter of this game belonged to the Cy Creek Cougars, thanks in large part to the tremendous shooting of DJ Richards who ended the period with 10 points. The Travis Tigers were getting good looks but were unfortunately unable to get many of them to fall. Mekhi McIntyre scored all 12 of first quarter points for the Tigers but that wasn’t nearly enough as Cy Creek knocked down six threes to end the period with a 23-12 lead.
End of the 1st Score
Cy Creek HS – 23
FB Travis HS – 12
Second Quarter
It was more of the same to start the second period…Cy Creek…3 pointer…nets. However, Cameron Crockett Cameron Crockett 6'7" | SF Fort Bend Travis | 2022 State TX woke up for the Tigers and started contributing with his scoring. His length proved to be difficult to contain as he was able to get to the rim and finish on a number of occasions. But three pointers by DJ Richard, Corey Hadnot, TJ Ashford and Hilton Harris for Cy Creek helped increase their lead to over 22 points at one point in the period. The Tigers were able to get back in the game by going on a run late, but still found themselves down 15 points when the buzzer sounded.
End of the 2nd Score
Cy Creek HS – 41
FB Travis HS – 26
Third Quarter
Mekhi McIntyre started the second half in good fashion scoring 8 quick points in only a minute and a half of game time, bringing the deficit within single digits. This forced Cy Creek to take an early timeout and when they came back to the floor, DJ Richards decided to go on a 7-0 run himself for the Cougars. From that point on, Cameron Crockett Cameron Crockett 6'7" | SF Fort Bend Travis | 2022 State TX , Jacob Jones and Eric Johns contributed scoring wise for Travis as they closed the gap in a relatively low scoring quarter.
End of the 3rd Score
Cy Creek HS – 53
FB Travis HS – 44
Forth Quarter
The fourth quarter was pretty tightly contested throughout, remaining a single digit game. Mekhi McIntyre and Zack Martines combined for 15 points in the quarter to eventually bring Travis within 1 point. And although Cy Creek only scored 13 points in the final frame, DJ Richards proved to just be too much as Travis was never able to overcome the large lead that Cy Creek was able to create. A last ditched effort for the Tigers was unsuccessful as a potential game tying three pointer fell short at the final buzzer.
End of the Game Score
Cy Creek HS – 66
FB Travis HS – 63
