Continue ReadingThere has been changes to the world as we know it, and the Colorado high school basketball scene has taken its fair share of changes as well. Typically at this time of the year, we will have already started with some tournaments to get things kicked off, but there has to be a compromise on both ends. Not only will the season start late, but it will be a condensed season, so it is critical that teams and players get off to hot starts. Here we will focus on the 5A/4A Southwestern League.
Jordan Woolverton – Durango
The Durango boys will be looking to have a bounce-back season as their leading scorer is a year wiser and ready to lead the way yet again. Woolverton is a 6’2 multi-sport athlete that has a great understanding of the game, is capable of knocking down the 3-ball, and also hunts for rebounds. He averaged 11.9 points and 4.9 rebounds a game and get going in bunches, and when he is hot, there is not many things a defense can do to slow him down. This season, while the team will rely on him, it will be about expanding his game and allowing things to come easier so others can be involved and take the pressure off of him. I expect him to be one of the top scorers in the conference.
Sam Johnson – Durango
Durango was a team that found success out of the conference but struggled in the conference last season. Johnson will be one of the remaining players and called upon seniors that will have to turn that around if they plan on getting back on the right track. In his junior season, he was a valuable piece as the 6’2 junior put up 5.5 points a game and also helped out on the boards. He defends at a high level, brings energy to the team, and plays the right way. His leadership will go a long way this season, and he has a chance to have his best season yet.
Dillon Chapman – Grand Junction
Chapman is a young combo-guard that steps out on the wings and defends multiple positions. He is not only a scorer but fills in where needed. In his sophomore season, he averaged 4.7 points a game and had moments where he scored in double digits. Building on those games and providing some consistency will be key if Grand Junction wants to turn things around this year. Chapman will have to progress as a rebounder, ball-handler, and shooter if he wants to put his team in better positions to win, but with the core returning, they have a chance to turn some things around.
Viktor Woldruff – Grand Junction
Woldruff is a multi-sport athlete that brings in those other characteristics to the court to compete at a high level. He is a high energy competitor that defends at a high level and is fearless. He will defend multiple positions and also is willing to dive on the floor for loose balls and do the dirty work. This season he did not score a ton but impacted the game in different ways. Hopefully, the wins start to come with it.
