Holthusen has grown to a strong, agile 6-foot-6. He spent his off-season taking steps. Delwyn was a key part of the Minnesota Select Robinson squad and then this spring he’s been traveling with an All-Star team.
“This fall I’ve played in a few tournaments with my All Native-American travel teams,” Holthusen explained. “I played down in Phoenix, Arizona in the “Arizona Fall Invite” with Team Unity out of Washington State. I’ve also payed in Salt Lake City, Utah and in Cape Girardeau, Missouri with Northern Thunder out of North Dakota.
“Other then that I haven’t been able to get in the gym or typically do anything up North where I live due to COVID regulations.”
For the most part Holthusen has been busy: busy improving and busy working so Red Lake basketball can win their first section title in four years.
“My Goals for this upcoming season are to surpass my Father’s high school career points (total) then aim for my 2,000th career points during my senior Season,” Delwyn said. “Another goal is to try to go undefeated this season. Last season we were a very young team and we only lost two seniors last year, one of them was a starter, so I do expect us to go far this season.
“From my personal perspective my team and I are looking good coming into the season.”
Red Lake went 15-12 last year but as Delwyn said, a lot of talent returns. Along with Holthusen, the Chaboyea brothers (Aaron and Riley) return as all league players and Gerald Kingbird Jr is a freshman who will be passed the torch very soon.
As far as Delwyn goes, he also has college basketball on his mind and rightfully so. Hopefully a good number of schools will be able to see Delwyn play because he has the talent to play college hoops. Schools have taken notice.
“What I feel has led to (be recruiting, receiving attention) is my outgoing personality with wanting to get as much exposure as I possibly can and get as much basketball playing time to improve and excel during this COVID pandemic.
“I’m not really hearing anything from any schools college wise right now. I’d say the next step in my recruitment is to take advantage of getting more exposure while I still can as a senior and to get my name out their more.”
