Small forward is a collection of long, explosive, dynamic athletes. While not the biggest position group in the rankings, it’s probably the most athletically impressive. They are probably the highest rated as a group as well.
Here are the seven small forwards in the first edition of the Kansas 2023 Player Rankings:
3 Caleb Wiese Caleb Wiese 6'4" | SF Garden City | 2023 State KS , Garden City:
Before Wiese made headlines as the quarterback for the Garden City football team, he was a starter on the basketball team as a mere freshman. The 6-foot-4 multi-sport athlete is smooth, athletic and a gamer with a high basketball IQ. As would be expected from a quarterback, he sees the court well, likes to spread the ball around, and is cool under pressure. 6A basketball was not too much for him as a freshman.
4 Eli Sawyers Eli Sawyers 6'7" | SF Southeast Of Saline | 2023 State KS , Southeast of Saline:
Sawyers was seemingly everywhere this summer. He played in numerous tournaments in Kansas, not always with the same team nor in the same age group. Regardless, he was the same unflappable, steady two-way player who can do so many things on the court. At 6-foot-5, he has plenty of ability in the lane, but he can face the basket, handle the ball, and score. Sawyers was honorable mention 3A last year as a freshman.
10 Aidan Wing Aidan Wing 6'4" | SF Bishop Miege | 2023 State KS , Miege (pictured):
The first thing that jumps out about the 6-foot-4 Wing is the ease with which he throws the ball down. But he’s much more than a high-flying dunker. He handles the ball, can kick the ball to a shooter or feed the post, and can score in a variety of ways. His athleticism and length make him a dangerous defender as well. He can score from distance or in a variety of ways around the key.
24 BJ Redic BJ Redic 6'2" | SF Andover | 2023 State KS , Andover:
One of the toughest and most fiery players on the summer circuit. Redic took winning seriously, and was a force on defense. At 6-foot-2, he can play everything from guard to post, and his athleticism gives him an edge no matter what position he’s guarding. He can drive and score, or create offense for others. He played on the uber-talented Oz Elite 2023 this summer, and was a sparkplug with his defense and intensity.
30 Caleb Brown Caleb Brown 6'3" | SF Derby | 2023 State KS , Derby:
Brown can play all over and do a lot of things well. At 6-foot-3, he could probably play every position on the court. He can drive to score or kick to teammates. He handles the ball well and knows how to find the open man. But on defense, his athleticism really sets him apart.
