The list starts with Marcus Zeigler Jr Marcus Zeigler Jr 6'2" | PG Wichita Heights | 2023 State KS , the second-ranked player in the initial rankings.
Here are the point guards in the first edition of the Kansas 2023 Player Rankings:
2 Marcus Zeigler Jr Marcus Zeigler Jr 6'2" | PG Wichita Heights | 2023 State KS , Wichita Heights:
Zeigler is ready to build upon a successful freshman season at Heights, and he took it a step further with his work for Team Perry Ellis this summer. He’s a 6-foot-1 traditional point guard with long arms and nifty moves with the ball. He can set up a defender with his crossover and leave them behind with his first-step quickness. He is a threat to score every time he touches the ball, and yet he knows when to lead, when to give the ball up, and when to take the shot from beyond the arc.
7 Jordan McGowan Jordan McGowan 5'10" | PG Shawnee Mission West | 2023 KS , Shawnee Mission West:
McGowan is a good ball handler who can create and get to the basket. Once in the lane, he has the athleticism to score despite being just 5-foot-10. He has a nice outside shot and good athleticism, which was on display his freshman season.
8 Jason Rodriguez Jason Rodriguez 5'10" | PG Bishop Miege | 2023 State KS , Bishop Miege (pictured):
One of the most accomplished freshmen in the state, Rodriguez was a key component on the Miege team that reached the semi-finals of 4A before the season was interrupted. He is a brilliant ball handler and decision maker who knows how to work with the loads of talent around him. He is a talented shooter, excellent driver with the ball and held his own defensively against older varsity players.
14 Garrett Robertson Garrett Robertson 5'10" | PG Hutchinson | 2023 State KS , Hutchinson:
Robertson showed how adept he is at running a team as a freshman at Hutchinson, then took the reigns of the Oz Elite team that featured nationally prominent big men. He wasn’t intimidated on either stage. He can shoot, score, and defend, but his best attribute is his feel for running an offense, keeping the game under control while pushing the tempo to suit his athletic teammates.
16 Malik O’Atis Malik O’Atis 5'11" | PG Shawnee Mission Northwest | 2023 State KS , Shawnee Mission Northwest:
Like so many 2023 players in the initial rankings, Oatis is also a football prospect. In fact, Oatis may be considerably better at football. He’s making quite a name for himself as a dynamite running back/receiver. What is evident in both sports is his stop-and-start explosiveness and his hops. Combine those physical gifts with his quick hands, ability to jump passing lanes and run the floor and he’s a real defensive machine on the hardcourt as well.
