There is an abundance of talent across the state and with the unique situations surrounding how this season will play out, competition will be fiercer than ever.
Prep Hoops takes a closer look at Pennsylvania high school boys basketball for this upcoming season, continuing a multi-part series of junior standouts to watch in the Suburban One League in both the American and Continental Divisions.
Jake Tiernan, G/F Upper Moreland: The Tiernan brothers are a standout duo on this Upper Moreland team and Jake is his brother’s equal. He has a quick release on his shot, something that stands out when watching him pull up from beyond the arc. He presses up on defense when the opportunity presents itself to cause a turnover, steal a pass and get Upper Moreland going the other way. Tiernan can also stuff opponents down low and can dominate in the paint on offense, filling up the stat sheet.
Zende Hubbard, SG Plymouth Whitemarsh: Hubbard is someone who is a difference-maker and a gamer, much of that coming from his stellar defense. He has hops and will show it off on the fast break, oftentimes one that he’s leading the charge on. He’s extremely quick on the court; blink once and he’s torching the defense, running down the lane for an easy bucket. Hubbard is only going to continue to build off of his unstoppable combination of speed and power for Plymouth Whitemarsh this season.
Kyle Kubit, SG Central Bucks West: Kubit looks great as a shooter in transition for Central Bucks West. He’s an impressive watch as a spot-up, three-point specialist and has a very quick release. As soon as he gets the ball with an open look, that ball is out of his hands in a split-second. It’s not just his shooting that stands out, but his defenseing is one of the main reasons why he’s able to get in transition so often, causing turnovers from steals and broken up passes. Kubit might go under the radar, but he’s a name to look out for on Central Bucks West this season.
Joe Larkins, PG/SG North Penn: Larkins, a two-sport athlete, definitely incorporates both when he’s playing basketball as he’s also a track and field standout for North Penn. He is quick and agile, a shot creator with the ball and a facilitator at the point. What really stands out is his spot-up shooting ability. He’s not afraid to shoot the elbow jumper, the 12-footer from the baseline. Larkins is a clutch player, a tireless defender with the ability to disrupt any opponent, and a crafty athlete when he weaves into the lane. North Penn is a team to watch with Larkins leading at the point.
Michael Farley, PF/C Central Bucks South: Farley dominates as a stretch five for Central Bucks South, a 6-7 center/forward combo with great handles and a soft touch. He’s grown into his current frame and he plays with swagger, tenacity and grit. He can get up for a dunk, but he doesn’t rely on that when he’s playing. He’s been featured out at the point and honestly, he looks like a guard at times. Just his ability to masterfully weave through defenses is incredible to watch on tape. Farley is a hot commodity and colleges, if they haven’t already, should be circling him on rosters to watch this season.
