The talent pool across the state is very deep and as you slowly start to branch out from the unquestionable statewide hub, Philadelphia, the competition is as strong and intriguing to watch.
Prep Hoops is going out to the Schuylkill League to profile some of the best 2022 standouts to watch out for this season.
David Richards, PF Jim Thorpe: Richards shows a lot of promise as a forward, but possesses traits of both a forward and a guard. His off-ball defending really stands out as he’s able to survey his opposition and get in a position to pick off a pass or intercept the dribble, causing ample turnovers. Richards pushes the fast break on offense and is a reliable scorer. Expect him to get the ball more this season and really capitalize on his speed up and down the floor.
Jack Lorenz, SF Lehighton: Lorenz is a proven, reliable shooter for this Lehighton team. He excels on the wings and plays well off-ball, getting space for a clean look at the basket. He is also one of the first players on the break if a turnover is caused on the defensive end, often started by Lorenz himself. He’s a tough, stout defender who is great at preventing dribble penetration into the paint, forcing the opposition to take a bad shot or make a bad pass. Lorenz is a name to look out for on this Lehighton team that hopes to make a statement this season.
Darren Yost, PG Pottsville: Yost is a really interesting watch as a 5-6 point guard because he doesn’t play like an undersized guard. He dominates the game when he’s on the floor, starting on offense where he’s dishing the rock to teammates or creating his own shot, getting open for a clean look from outside or driving hard into the lane. On defense, he’s agile and will switch off or get in the way to create turnovers to put Pottsville on the break. Yost is a proven leader and Pottsville is going to rely on him a lot this season so watch out for him.
Kade Deeter, G/F Tri-Valley: There really is a lot to like about Deeter’s play style on offense. He has a varied shot selection and is lethal from just about anywhere around the arc or inside of it. His decision-making really stands out, not settling for any shot. If he can drive inside or can get closer to the basket, he’ll do it or he’ll dish it off to a teammate. He moves around the floor well on defense, stays with his man and doesn’t drift back to give space or allow himself to get blown by. He’s difficult to score on, something Tri-Valley will make great use of this season.
Tyler Silva, SG Mahanoy Area: Silva is a perfect combination of a lethal scorer and a shut-down defender. He excels in an up-tempo offense and likes to play a fast-paced game which just suits his 6-2 build. He is someone who finds a way to get to the rim, get into the lane and dominate in the paint on offense. That’s just one-half of his game as on defense, he’s athletic and agile, a player with great court vision that will create turnovers from steals and quickly start up a fast break. Once he’s on the move, there’s little stopping Silva.
