The excitement has been contained but has been growing, along with much anticipation for just what to expect this season and while we don’t know exactly what will happen, it’s going to be very high-octane and very competitive.
Prep Hoops has been taking a look at some of the best talent around the state leading up to the season and in this continuation of a multi-part series, it takes a closer look at junior standouts in the Lancaster-Lebanon League.
Brendan Weaver, C Garden Spot: There is really a lot to like about Weaver, who plays essentially the stretch five role. He has the height and size of a center, but he has range and can shoot the three well, plus he’s able to get up and down well. His agility and athleticism makes him stand out from a traditional center because he doesn’t just camp out in the low post. He can do so much more, even that of what the traditional roles for guards and forwards have been. That versatility plays well into his favor moving forward and allows him to be an added threat for Garden Spot.
Nahjeir Aikens, PG/SG Lancaster Catholic: Aikens is a two-sport athlete, starring at wide receiver and cornerback for the football team. That speed, athleticism and playmaking ability needed to excel at those positions rubbed off on the basketball court as he’s one of the most consistent and reliable players for Lancaster Catholic. He’s got great hands, helpful for creating turnovers off steals and picking off bad passes on defense, and controlling the game on the offensive end, pulling up from three, taking the midrange jumper or driving into the lane for the tough deuce.
Trenton Dorsing, SF/PG Lancaster Mennonite: Dorsing is exactly what you look for in a combo guard/forward player. He also fits well in at shooting guard, so he’s a versatile player on the floor and it shows in his style of play. He’s really able to do anything from playing tough on defense, not letting anything in and not getting backed down by the opponent to being a crafty offensive player and creating a lot of scoring opportunities for Lancaster Mennonite. Dorsing is going to build off the success of 2019/20 with a stellar campaign this season.
Jack Engle, PG/SG Lancaster Catholic: Engle is an interesting two-sport athlete, playing both basketball and soccer at Lancaster Catholic. While his foot doesn’t help him out in basketball as much, his agility and skills on the soccer field are ideal for the basketball court. He looks great as a combo guard and just from watching him switch off and create space off-ball, shooting guard is probably the way to go for Engle in the future. He is a great ball-handler and should be seeing it plenty over the course of this season for Lancaster Catholic.
Kerry Glover Kerry Glover PG Columbia | 2022 State PA , PG Columbia: Glover right now looks several steps ahead of his competition. What he can do when he gets into the lane is a thing of beauty. He’s so crafty at the rim and just finds a way to get the ball in the basket, however difficult the shot is. He’s also selfless, dishing the ball often to his teammates who are often open from the space he created just from drawing more defenders toward him. He’s a facilitator and a shot creator and on defense, he can come up with a key stop at the right time, turn the possession around and get a sure-fire fast break situation the other way for an easy bucket. Glover is going to be a stud for Columbia this season.
