However, between those two cities, there is an abundance of talent, a lot of which has been undiscovered. Coming into this 2020/21 high school boys basketball season, that talent is going to be discovered.
Prep Hoops will help with that, continuing its multi-part series of a look at junior standouts to watch in the Lancaster-Lebanon League.
Augie Gerhart, SF/PF/C Cocalico: Gerhart is a versatile player, but his game is best in the paint. He uses his size to get on top of opponents, make them uncomfortable inside the perimeter, and force bad shots and passes. He is one of Cocalico’s go-to shot blockers, if not their best option on the team. He has double-double written all over him: feed it to him down low and he’s going to find a way to score or draw contact to get to the line for free throws. Gerhart is what you are looking for and more in a big man, a stretch five talent.
Khalil Masden, PF/SG Donegal: Masden plays a crucial role and position for Donegal as a versatile, combo forward. His presence can be felt especially on defense where he racks up a lot of steals from not only being in the right place at the right time, but also having great court awareness. He’s someone you rely on to make a big play in a big moment and it’s not just causing turnovers. He’s rushing down the floor on the break to make something happen again, going coast-to-coast for the score.
Techeal Gonquoi, PG/SG Elizabethtown: Gonquoi is a fantastic defender, one of the first things that jumps off his tape. He stays with his player well, switches off without a hitch, and is great at thinking one step ahead of his opponent, coaxing them into a bad pass or a poor route to the basket that ends up in a turnover. The shooting guard side of him shines from the outside and the point guard in him shines in the paint as he creates a lot of open space and loves to drive into the lane for a shot.
Feyon Peterson, CG/SF Ephrata: Peterson is fast on the break and likes to play a high-octane, fast-paced style of basketball that tires out opponents. He’s pushing the ball inside, either through a pass or himself driving into the lane. He forces contact and puts his opponent on the defensive as foul trouble starts to come into play. It’s the little things that Peterson does well, the smooth transition between shots, the maturity at the point, that’s going to make him a big factor for Ephrata this season.
Trey Rios, PG/SG Cocalico: Rios has quite the hot hand from the perimeter and is arguably Cocalico’s best three-point shooter. He fits into the mold of this new era of shooters that are three-point specialists and absolutely dominate shooting from the perimeter. However, his game isn’t one-dimensional as he’s also a fantastic defensive presence, a steal threat, and he draws defenders away, creating space for others on offense. Rios is a superstar in the making for Cocalico.
