With no set timetable to return yet, teams, players, coaches and fans are yearning for basketball to once again get underway in one of the nation’s hotbeds for talent.
Prep Hoops will keep you up-to-date on the latest news regarding the season, but until then, we are previewing some of the players to watch out for across the state.
This will be the first in a multi-part series taking a look at junior standouts in the Lancaster-Lebanon League.
Cole Overbaugh, PF/SF Hempfield: Overbaugh is what you are looking for in a stretch forward, a versatile player who can man the middle or take on defenders on the perimeter, and has the ability to shoot from anywhere. He shows agility well on defense as switches off opponents and finds lanes to steal passes or pick up loose balls. Overbaugh’s best part of his game is his precision passing and for someone who likes to dominate in the paint, he can throw off the defense by taking the ball at the top of the key and quickly dishing it off to a teammate for an open look.
JT Weaver, PG/SG Manheim Township: Weaver is a fascinating player to watch on tape, not someone who is going to overpower you physically, but a skilled, crafty player with a lot of upside on this Manheim Township team. He’s already shown plenty of his playmaking abilities: shooting well from the outside, drawing defenders and contact when he gets into the lane, and pushing opponents to the brink on defense. He’s the one who will start the break after creating a turnover and that, among his other strong suits, will be on display throughout the season.
Shamell Burke, PG/SG McCaskey: Burke will be utilized much more by McCaskey this season and this year is the year for him to break out. He has the ability to really shine on both ends of the floor, starting with his pesky defense. He’s not going to overpower you with his size, but he’s fast and is really good at disrupting defenses. On offense, he displays the level of talent and poise you look for in a combo guard, a confident player with the ball, a playmaker, a facilitator, but also a pure scorer.
Seth Miller, PG Manheim Township: Miller, while being listed as a point guard, is a versatile player and can definitely switch off and feature as a forward and a shooting guard. He’s someone who really likes to push the tempo of the game, get off on the break and tire out opponents just from his agility and court speed. He’s a great transition shooter, a stellar off-ball guard who likes to let it fly from beyond the arc. Manheim Township will be relying on Miller’s sharp shooting a lot this season so stay tuned.
Brok Oldac, PF/SF Manheim Township: Oldac is one of Manheim Township’s best forwards and really is a jack of all trades for this team. He’s someone who can go up for a crunch time block on one end and then finish the sequence off with a three-pointer on the other end. He’s able to play his game on the floor: a combination of size and physicality in the paint on defense and a quick release with a smooth shot on offense. Oldac’s ceiling is going to dramatically rise this season so keep your eyes out.
