In this report the players I saw are 6’5 to 6’8, and don’t necessary stuff the stat sheets scoring points, but can be productive in their own right. They’ll help a team with their size, and length. This group has work to do, but should be considered, with more seasoning, and development. DII, DIII, NAIA, Juco could be a good fit.
David Akanju 6’6 Woodside Priory 2021
Akanju has a muscular body, with good strength, to defend in the low post area against taller players. He worked the mid-post area using two dribbles, a and spin move to get few shots going towards the basket, he hit some jumpers in the short corner. He has the range to shoot 3’s, but is more effective in the mid-range area right now, although he did hit a few at the top of the arc.
Ryan Kent 6’7 Dublin 2021
I might put Kent in the late bloomer category. He has a frame that could use some bulking up a bit, long arms, and he runs the court. He’s raw right now. Kent has a big wide stance posting up, long arms, with improved footwork, he can be an effective scorer inside. The lefty hit a few turnaround jumpers on the block, and scored with his jumper in the short corner. He’ll get a good number of put backs for two going after the offensive rebound. He’s got good size to defend in the post and can change some shots. He needs to be aggressive on both ends.
Avery Johnson III 6’7 Edison 2021
I saw Johnson play 2 games Saturday, he spent a majority of his time bringing the ball up the court and trying to show his versatile skills as a play maker. At 6’7 he did good handling, and passing the ball in transition. The lefty showed he could take his defender off the dribble, shoot the mid-range jumper. He has a quick 2nd jump attacking the offensive boards. Johnson has good foot speed. He’ll defend in the post, and on the perimeter. He needs to improve his shot making on the perimeter, and finishing drives into the paint. A good athlete.
Damare Watts 6’5 Roosevelt 2021
Watts a thick, and muscular looking undersized post player, can be physical at times, and make it tough for players coming through the lane. He has a strong low base, and doesn’t give much ground against taller defenders, forcing them to shoot over him at times. He’s a strong player who should use his big body more effectively. He had a couple of strong finishes from the baseline, and going up off 2ft. Being aggressive when he has the ball in the paint, and going after rebounds out of his space, would improve his stock.
Joey Protrenic 6’6 San Ramon Valley 2021
Protrenic has good size, can defend on the block, and had some success guarding on the wings. He has good lateral movement with good arm length that takes away passing lanes, he’s a good weak side help defender. Protrenic can spot up in the corner and shoot 3’s. He has a jump hook he uses to score with down on the block. He sets good screens on the pick n roll.
Michael Moreno 6’5 Christian Brothers 2021
A good fundamental player who doesn’t make many mistakes. Moreno plays within the system, taking what the defense gives, he’s a good ball mover, sets good screens, and moves without the ball. He has some tools that make him effective on the block as well as on the perimeter. He uses several post moves to get his shot off, and the potential to be a good spot up shooter from the corner, and wings.
