Continue ReadingThe prolonged shutdown has taken a toll on everyone, but it’s really harmful to the kids trying to earn a college scholarship. While it was bad enough to loose the Spring and Summer season, loosing the high school season as well could be catastrophic to the future of several players. In this article PH takes a look at the players most effected by loosing the season.
- Tavionte Jackson Tavionte Jackson 6'1" | PG Las Vegas | 2022 NV 6’1 PG Las Vegas 2022 (#4PHN 2022) – Right now we should be in the middle of the Tavionte Jackson Tavionte Jackson 6'1" | PG Las Vegas | 2022 NV novel that sees a loyal homegrown talent developing into a potential D1 star. Jackson has put together two monster years for coach Wilson and Las Vegas High, and was just scratching the surface of his recruitment. Missing his entire junior season is going to be a big blow and could be the difference in him becoming a low vs mid to high major prospect.
- Cameron Kimble Cameron Kimble 6'4" | SG Clark | 2021 State NV 6’4 SG Clark 2021 (#9PHN 2021) – Really hurting for Kimble as he is a D1 talent with perhaps no where to take his talents. Here’s a guy that plays for Vegas Elite but didn’t get an EYBL season, and now runs the risk of loosing his entire high school season. Kimble’s biggest strength was his consistency, now through no fault of his own he looses that strength in the evaluation process.
- DJ Thomas DJ Thomas 6'2" | PG Liberty | 2024 #19 Nation NV 6’0 PG Liberty 2024 (#1PHN 2024) – I realize it’s not the same because of his youth, but there is something special about watching a talented freshmen begin his career. We witnessed it last season when Sebastian Mack Sebastian Mack 6'4" | CG Coronado | 2023 State #58 Nation NV burst onto the scene, and all indications were that Thomas was prepared to do the same thing. In reality the real losers end up being the fans that miss out on watching this talented freshmen begin his career.
- Ethan Speaker Ethan Speaker 6'6" | SF Boulder City | 2021 State NV 6’6 SF Boulder City 2021 (#7PHN 2021) – Yes, Speaker did ink a scholarship to a division 1 program, however I can’t help but think we are missing out on what would have been a spectacular statistical season. Last year as a junior Speaker averaged 25 and 11, and he’s gotten better since then. While it sounds crazy, a 30 and 15 state championship season from him was not out of the realm of possibility.
- Osiris Grady Osiris Grady 6'7" | PF Coronado | 2023 #195 Nation UT 6’7 PF Coronado 2023 (#2PHN 2023) – We all miss out on a potential Coronado V Gorman 5A championship game. The person most effected by this loss may be Grady who brings a different dimension to the Cougars. His ability to impact games with his shot blocking, and rim running would have been intriguing and quite possibly given the Gaels trouble. He also misses out on a season of playing high profile games in front of scouts and coaches.
- Jonathan Braggs Jonathan Braggs 6'3" | SG Bishop Gorman | 2021 State NV 6’3 SG Bishop Gorman 2021 (#10PHN 2021) – See Grady’s remarks and ditto them for Braggs. Now add in the fact that it is his senior season and you can see how missing the season could impact the career of the wing sniper.
- Mason Mich’l Mason Mich’l 6'7" | PF Desert Oasis | 2021 State NV 6’7 PF Desert Oasis 2021 (#14PHN 2021) – I’ve spoken with a lot of coaches about Mich’l and the one thing they want to see from him is consistency. It’s obviously a lot harder for him to show without a season.
- Shane Thomas Shane Thomas 6'3" | SG Durango | 2022 State NV 6’3 SG Durango 2022 (#6PHN 2022) – For me Thomas is one of the most intriguing players in the state. I still have a ton of questions about his game that I wanted answered. I also feel that playing under one of the best coaches on a talented Durango team was going to do a lot to bring out his ceiling. Perhaps this is a situation where I’m more frustrated than him, but missing an entire high school season definitely hurts.
- Dontrell Johnson Dontrell Johnson 6'5" | SF Trinity | 2022 State NV 6’5 PF Bonanza 2022 (#13PHN 2022) – The loss of the season is probably most disastrous to the players already impacted by the state’s ridiculous transfer rules. Johnson couldn’t play Varsity last season because of the transfer and now faces the prospect of missing his junior season as well. He is a high motor 4 man, who I have no idea of his level simply because he hasn’t played in enough competitive games.
- 10. Aaron Price Aaron Price 6'7" | PF Liberty | 2022 State NV 6’7 PF Liberty 2022 (#8PHN 2022) – You could repeat what was said about Johnson about Price. The athletic forward also sat out last year behind the transfer rules, now the whole state misses out on one of the top dunkers, as Price and his highlight reel bounce look to be potentially sidelined.
