“What’s the sentiment around recruiting currently? Are many players worried that they won’t be able to play/be seen by coaches due to Covid? Are kids having to create videos and a stronger online presence? ”-@Perry Keatley (Instagram)
Luckily this summer there were a good amount of platforms made available for kids to be seen on different live streams from different smaller regional events. Obviously, that is not the most ideal way to be seen in front college coaches but it is better than nothing.
This high school season has a lot of questions that remain to be answered as we are waiting for word from different leagues about what exactly the plan might be going forward to have a successful high school season.
More than ever, college coaches are depending on film to evaluate different prospects and will continue to depend on different scouting services.
In terms of recruiting, that has not slowed down at all and to be honest, more offers might have been thrown out this summer than previous summers.
“I’m assuming official visits are banned currently? If so, what are coaches doing to give the kids the feel/atmosphere of the campus and program? ”-@Perry Keatley (Instagram)
The NCAA has pushed the recruiting dead period all the way back to at least January 1st which basically means coaches can’t go watch prospects, visit prospects and prospects can’t do official visits until at least January 1st. Just like this past spring and summer, college coaches will continue to do zoom meetings with prospects and set up a “virtual official visit”. In these “virtual official visits” the coaches have put together slide shows and short clips of the campus and different ins and outs of the program. These virtual official visits are as close to the real thing that can happen right now.
“Do you feel that there has been a drop off in talent in the 757 in the past five years from when we were in high school, pre 2015? ”-@d_real_king (Instagram)
There definitely has been a decline in talent from the 757 and it is disappointing that it has become that way because of the way the area used to be. One reason why the private schools do not have some of the top talent from the area or the state is because of the schools becoming strict about who they admit to the high school. For example, the TCIS conference used to be an absolute powerhouse in basketball but all of those schools have become very limited about transfers coming in.
Another reason is because we have seen some of the top prospects from the area transfer out of the area to go to more big named basketball high schools and that is partly because their original school in the area does not have enough talent or just does not care greatly about basketball.
I don’t want to completely bash the area though as we do see talent from the area go on to division one schools and I continue to expect to see a handful of prospects to commit to division one programs in future years, it will just not be as many as we have seen before.
