Here are some of the top Topeka guards looking for more playing time in 2020-21:
Pearse Bowen, Kansas 94×50 Elite 15U, Washburn Rural, 2023:
Perenially one of the top programs in the state, Rural doesn’t lose that much from last year’s club and could add several nice pieces, including Bowen. The 5-foot-11 sophomore is a good ball handler from end to end and can break down a defender. He can get in the lane and create, or shoot it from deep. Playing time may be tough to get next year, but Bowen has the skills to potentially make a contribution.
Jayden Leesman, Kansas Hoggs U17, Topeka High, 2021:
Topeka High was a senior-laden group last year, so guys like Leesman had a tough time getting playing time as a junior. Watch for him to step into a significant role this year. He’s a deft ball handler who could help returning guard Jalen Smith with some of the ball handling role. He has good moves with the ball and good quickness.
Tre Richardson, Kansas 94×50 Elite 15U, Highland Park, 2023:
Richardson is built in a similar mold as Jahi Peppers Jahi Peppers 5'9" | CG Highland Park | 2021 State KS and Juan’Tario Roberts, who will lead a fast-paced attack for Highland Park. There may not be enough playing time available for Richardson to play a huge role, but the loaded Scots might just be able to find a role for him. He’s a 5-foot-11 speedster who can handle the ball under pressure or push it aggressively up the floor. But defense may be his forte. He’s got quick hands and intercepts passes.
Zane Wech, KC United 16U, Washburn Rural, 2022:
Wech could possibly be the shooter Rural needs to fill the hole left by senior Noah Kruger. He is a good ball-handler and defender, but shooting from deep is his strength. He is tough, hits the boards and defends. Rural returns a ton, but watch for Wech to get some important minutes.
