Continue ReadingThe path to a four-year school doesn’t always start out directly out of high school and it’s a route that’s well-traveled over the years from the state of Oregon. The journey has often ended up as high as the Division I level but many have parlayed successful stints in junior college into other opportunities as well. This is particularly the case with former Oregon preps who have made the decision to play at NJCAA or CCCAA institutions, which in some cases has opened up college recruitment opportunities nationally.
Here’s a look at some of the former Oregon preps who are now top sophomores at NJCAA or CCCAA schools who will be looking to make an impression on four-year college coaches this season.
Ty Rankin – 2019 Grant/Eastern Arizona JC
The 6-foot-2 combo guard who helped lead Grant to the 2018 6A state title had a solid freshman year at Eastern Arizona. The Gila Monsters captured the Region I, Division I title while Rankin contributed an all-around 11.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 2.4 assists. One area where he showed consistency was from the perimeter where he sank over 38 percent from three-point range. With the top three scorers from last year’s team – including fellow PDX standout Jalen Brown – Rankin is the leading scorer back and should post some bigger numbers this season as more of a go-to guy.
Bostyn Holt – 2018 Roosevelt/Coffeyville (KS) CC (HUDL highlights)
It’s been awhile since Holt was at Roosevelt as he attended Elite Prep in Washington for a year before heading out to Coffeyville this past season. With the Ravens, his versatility was utilized as the now 6-foot-7 swingman played multiple positions on both ends of the floor and ended up averaging 6.7 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.2 assists as the team captured the Region VI title. He’s one of the top scoring returnees back from last season so don’t be surprised to see him increase his output.
Seyi Reiley – 2018 De la Salle North/City College of San Francisco
Reiley is another one who has bounced around a little since helping lead De La Salle North to the 2018 3A title. He spent a year at Hawaii with the intention of walking on to the basketball team but things didn’t work out, so he moved on to the City College of San Francisco in 2019-20. The Rams are arguably the powerhouse of the CCCAA and they finished the shortened season with an undefeated 29-0 record. The athletic 6-foot-6 swingman thrived in CCSF’s super high-octane offense and was a key energizer off the bench at 6.8 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. He’ll have a bigger role as a sophomore.
Bo Quinlan – 2018 Southridge/McCook (NE) CC
Quinlan has continued to develop both physically and as a player since graduating from Southridge in 2018. After a year of prep school in Arizona, the now 6-foot-4 wing is now at McCook in Nebraska and put together a solid freshman campaign, averaging 5.6 points and 2.1 rebounds coming off of the bench. He’s continued to make his mark as a marksman from the outside, hitting just under 40 percent from three-point range. McCook has some key guys moving on so Quinlan will get a good chance to advance to a bigger role in 2020-21.
Abdi Dahir – 2018 David Douglas/Central Wyoming JC
After graduating from David Douglas, Dahir spent a year at a prep school in Las Vegas before going the JC route at Central Wyoming. Last season as a freshman, Dahir averaged 5.2 points and 3.7 rebounds while coming off of the bench. At 6-foot-5, Dahir is long and rangy and is best creating off of the dribble but he can knock down some perimeter shots as well. Central Wyoming moved on several sophomores to four-year schools – including former Grant standout Darius Guinn to Bryant – so Dahir will get a good shot at stepping into the starting lineup.
Khalil Chatman – 2018 Jefferson/Southeastern (IA) CC
The last time we saw Chatman on the basketball floor, he was dominating the paint for Jefferson in the 2018 6A title game where the Demos fell just short to Grant. He then signed with Pacific but things didn’t pan out and he’s been out of the game the past two seasons. The athletic 6-foot-8 forward is listed as a sophomore at Southeastern and it will be interesting to see how things go for him as he shakes off the rust this season.
