The Prep Hoops Top 250 Expo hit Sioux Falls Sunday, as high school players from North and South Dakota braved the snow in an effort to get into the gym and compete.
With top-notch players from both states taking part, there was no shortage of competitive basketball.
Here were some of the standout underclassmen:
Alex Dvorak Alex Dvorak 6'1" | PG Dickinson | 2023 State ND , Dickinson
Dvorak is one of the breakout candidates in the WDA this winter despite being just a sophomore and it’s easy to see why. He’s got a complete game on both ends of the floor. Dvorak has the quickness to beat defenders off the dribble and get to the paint plus the perimeter jumper to threaten beyond the 3-point line. He’s not the biggest guy but he plays through contact well and can finish over length. And he doesn’t shy away from getting up into someone on the defensive end of the floor. He’s not the biggest, but he does a good job preventing dribble penetration and contesting on the perimeter.
Darik Dissette Darik Dissette 6'4" | SG Minot | 2023 State #300 Nation ND , Minot
Dissette is one of North Dakota’s top 2023 prospects and it’s easy to salivate over his combination of skills and athletic profile. He’s got excellent length and a smooth explosiveness that allows him to get to the rim with seeming ease. He’s a solid shooter especially in the mid-range and has the burst to create separation. He’s unselfish as a playmaker and his combination of size and quickness allows him to defend just about perimeter player.
Raymond Brown Raymond Brown 5'11" | PG Fargo Davies | 2023 State ND , Fargo Davies
Brown’s one of the most intriguing point guards from Sunday, as he’s not the biggest kid, but he’s shifty and tough. He’s nearly impossible to keep out of the paint, as he’s got excellent quickness and slick handles. He’s a decent finisher – though finishing over length will be something he has to continue to develop – and showed that he can knock down mid-range jumpers with consistency. He’s a competitive defender who will get up into his counterpart as well.
Adam Jenkins, Moorhead
A 6-foot-7 sophomore, Jenkins looks like a guy who will carry a lot of intrigue and upside over the next couple seasons. He’s rangy and mobile, and does a great job running the floor and either creating scoring opportunities for himself at the rim or drawing defenders and opening up the floor for teammates. He’s a solid finisher who elevates easily and the athleticism he has allows him to defend on the perimeter and still get back to the paint.
Porter Ihnen, Lennox
Ihnen is a long, athletic combo-forward who looks like he’s got a lot of potential. He’s very fluid for a young player and his length coupled with his quickness allows him to not only defend opposing frontcourt players but also hang on the perimeter. He’s aggressive in transition going to the rim and showed a soft shooting touch. He’s only a freshman, but it looks like there’s a player to watch there.
Kaden Year Kaden Year 6'2" | SF O'gorman | 2023 State SD , SF Roosevelt
Year is a promising young big man who played with terrific energy and hustle Sunday afternoon. He’s a long, limber kid who doesn’t shy away from contact inside, working hard to establish low post position for touches or along the baseline to be available on duck-ins and drop-offs. He did a good job applying help defense and patrolling the paint to protect the rim too.
