The tough 6-foot-2, 205-pound lead guard from South Albany was coming off a brilliant junior campaign and was all set to really make his mark on the AAU scene. Those plans were severely cut back but he was able to get out to a couple of events with the Oregon Prospects and is hopeful the upcoming season will lead to recruitment opportunities.
“It’s been good with the Prospects,” Gilliam said. “With only being able to play two tourneys with them, it helped me out a lot getting back into rhythm from missing months of not playing since the state tourney.”
Paired on a “South” squad with a number of other top players from the Salem and Eugene areas, Gilliam played his game, getting to the hoop and finishing while also getting the ball to his talented teammates. He also got a chance to work on another important part of his game.
“My main focus right now is just gaining confidence with my jumpshot,” Gilliam said. “That’s just been going on right now just getting comfortable shooting the ball and not worrying about whether I miss or make. Just to keep on shooting.”
The hope was to really get things going with his college recruitment but so far, the main schools that have been in contact have been Clackamas and George Fox. “As far as recruiting, I haven’t gotten a whole lot of looks,” Gilliam said. “But I’m still hopeful for a season this year to get a few college’s interest.”
The season will give Gilliam another opportunity to shine. Last season he averaged 17.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 3.1 assists while shooting just under 54 percent from the field and given the makeup of South Albany’s team this year, don’t be surprised if those stats go up even more.
“This upcoming year is going to be tough after losing 9 seniors, but we still have some potential with the younger class coming up,” Gilliam said. “I’m also very excited to play with my brother who’s gonna be a freshman this year. But for sure, I’m just going to keep being that leader role and build our team to our highest potential. And for me and my personal goal, show I’m the best player in the league.”
Gilliam currently ranks as the #21 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2021 rankings.
