Teams that are unable to get good lead guard play tend to struggle, while good teams are usually led by their point guards. The Prep division is filled with good point guards who should make an impact at the next level. Here are the top point guards to look for in the prep division next season.
Jaylen Blakes Jaylen Blakes 6'1" | PG Blair Academy | 2021 State #121 Nation NJ , 6’1 Blair Academy 2021
Blakes is the top point guard in New Jersey after steering the Buccaneers’ offense last season. The 6’1 guard has a good handle and is capable of beating his defender off the bounce. Blakes can finish through contact, score in the midrange and knock down jumpers from behind the arc. He is a good passer and is a leader on the floor. Blakes is a big-time player who should have a strong senior season for Blair Academy.
Ty-Laur Johnson Ty-Laur Johnson 6'1" | PG St. Benedict's | 2023 #134 Nation NY , 5’10 St. Benedict’s 2023
The Grey Bees are consistently one of the teams to beat in the Garden State and they should be again with Johnson running the show. The 5’10 guard is lightning quick with the ball in his hands and knows how to push the ball in transition. Johnson is hard to contain off the bounce and knows how to finish around the rim. He is a tough on-ball defender who is unafraid of picking up his man full court. Johnson’s combination of toughness and speed gives St. Benedict’s a strong lead guard capable of taking the Grey Bees back to the Prep A championship game.
Guy Fauntleroy Guy Fauntleroy 6'0" | PG Olympus Prep | 2022 State NJ , 6’0 Olympus Prep 2021
Fauntleroy may not be a household name around New Jersey, but he should make an impact in the Garden State this season. The Maryland native is crafty with the ball in his hands and is tough to keep out of the lane. Fauntleroy is a good finisher around the basket and is unafraid of contact. He always plays under control with the ball in his hands and moves his feet on the defensive end. Fauntleroy is a talented point guard who should lead the Olympus Prep attack this season.
Hampton Sanders Hampton Sanders 6'0" | PG Lawrenceville | 2023 State NJ , 6’0 Princeton Day 2023
Sanders had a strong debut season for Princeton Day and should have a bigger role in 2020-21. The 6’0 guard knows how to take his defender off the bounce and can finish around the basket. Sanders is a solid passer and is capable of knocking down jumpers on the perimeter. He is a good rebounder for a guard and is a solid defender. Sanders is a tough lead guard who is ready for a larger role in Princeton Day’s offense.
Yasen Crawford Yasen Crawford 5'11" | PG Paterson Kennedy | 2022 State NJ , Pioneer Academy 2022
Crawford took home a sectional title in 2019-20 and is looking to bring that championship mentality to Pioneer Academy. The Paterson Kennedy transfer is a pure point guard who knows how to run an offense. Crawford rarely makes mistakes with the ball in his hands and has a good handle. He is a tough on-ball defender and is unafraid of mixing it up on the defensive end. Freshman David Dix David Dix 5'8" | PG St. Benedict's | 2024 NLG will also get a look at point guard, but Crawford’s toughness and passing will make him a tough guard to stop for Pioneer Academy.
