Throughout the week, we’ll be taking a look at some of the best players in the gym, in a series of articles breaking down the top scorers, defenders, passers, etc. In this article, we take a look at the top shooters that Tony Roe saw at the event. He was responsible for covering teams 1, 2, 7, 9, 10 and 16, so all players that he writes about this week will come from those teams. The other teams will be covered by Josh Block and Richard Stockton.
PG Terrell Fowler (Wahlert Catholic – 2021)
Fowler first jumped out to me when I saw the Golden Eagles play in the postseason in February, as he came off the bench to provide a real scoring spark in that game. He showed a lot of the same abilities at the Top 250. He’s a good shooter who has the ability to shoot it effectively both off the dribble and the catch. He gets the ball into his shooting pocket quickly and has a quick release with extended range. He uses his jumper to help open up the rest of his game, using his quickness to get to the bucket for easy finishes as well. He’s a better shooter when he’s shooting in rhythm.
SG Mason Scheve Mason Scheve 6'1" | SG Pleasantville | 2022 State IA (Pleasantville – 2022)
Scheve was largely a shooter for Pleasantville as a sophomore, when he averaged 11.3 points and shot 43% from behind the arc. He showed that he’s expanding his all-around skill set last Saturday, impacting the game on both ends of the floor. He moves well off the ball and has a quick release on the catch. His greatest attribute is still is shooting, but it’s nice to see him becoming a better all-around player, and finding ways to impact the game when the shot isn’t falling.
PG Tate Petersen Tate Petersen 6'1" | PG Monticello | 2023 State IA (Monticello – 2023)
Petersen is always going to be one of the best shooters in Iowa’s 2023 class. He moves extremely well off the ball and has a quick release on the catch. He still needs to add a lot of strength, which will open up his all-around scoring skill set, but he’s a high-level shooter who makes his defender work hard to keep pace with him. He’s also a strong ball-handler who can get others involved.
SF Chase Bartlett Chase Bartlett 6'2" | SG Southeast Polk | 2021 State IA (Southeast Polk – 2021)
Bartlett was one of the breakout players in the state over the summer, and he continued his upward trajectory here. A high-level shooter with great size and length, he’s a threat to pull from anywhere on the floor, and with his size, he can get his shot off against most defenders. He’s an active player who can also make an impact on the defensive end with his length.
SF Adam Mattes Adam Mattes 6'3" | SG Newton | 2022 State IA (Newton – 2022)
Mattes was on fire when we caught him in live action, putting on a shooting clinic off the catch. He has his feet set and squared, and he does a great job getting the ball into his shooting pocket in a hurry (if the passer doesn’t get it there himself). He has a high, repeatable release on his jumper, and has shown an improved ability to create his own shot. He looked much, much better than the 23.7% his shot from 3 as a sophomore for Newton.
SG Logan Schilling (Newton – 2021)
Like Mattes, his high school teammate, Schilling is active off the ball and is a good shooter off the catch. He does a nice job getting his feet squared and ready to shoot on the catch.
PG Corey Miner Corey Miner 6'0" | PG Mason City | 2022 State IA (Mason City – 2022)
Miner put together a really strong offensive showing all-around, but it was his shooting that was the biggest attribute that jumped out. A lefty with a smooth release and extended range, he showed a high-level ability to move off the ball and get off his shot in a hurry on the catch.
SF Keaton Farmer Keaton Farmer 6'2" | CG Waverly-Shell Rock | 2022 State IA (Waverly-Shell Rock – 2022)
Farmer didn’t shoot the ball at a high clip in the live viewings that we had during his games, but we know that he can shoot the rock with great form, a high release and good range. Most impressive about him was that he was finding other ways to contribute, despite the fact that his jumper wasn’t falling at the clip that he would’ve liked. He has good size, good form and gets good rotation on his shot.
