With top-notch players from both states taking part, there was no shortage of competitive basketball.
Here were some of the standout senior guards:
Eli Williams Eli Williams 6'1" | SG Sioux Falls Washington | 2021 State SD – SF Washington
Williams was one of the highest rated players in the event Sunday from either state and he played like it, delivering strong performances on both ends of the floor. He’s a competitive defender who has the length to contest shots and the quickness to contain dribble penetration. He’s a smooth operator with the ball in his hands and routinely made plays for his teammates or got to the rim and scored in traffic.
Chase Merrill Chase Merrill 6'3" | SG Canistota | 2021 State SD – Canistota
Merrill is a strong, physical guard who showed on Sunday that he can excel when playing through contact going to the rim. He brought it on both ends of the floor, using his size and strength to muscle defenders on his way to the paint or create separation for jumpers, and he’s a hard guy to get by on the defensive end of the floor.
Jabril Muktar – SF Lincoln
Muktar was one of the top point guards in the event Sunday and his ability to get wherever he wants on the floor coupled with his seemingly innate ability to get teammates easy shot after easy shot makes him a treat to watch. He’s undersized, but he does a great job applying pressure defensively and leveraging ballhandlers to his advantage. He’s tough-as-nails on the defensive end of the floor, and he makes the game easier for any collection of teammates he’s got.
Marcelino Mandapat – Ingraham
Mandapat is a feisty, competitive lead guard who showed he can make an impact on his team without having to score a whole lot. He’s cat-quick and can break down primary defenders whenever he wants and has a good package of finishing moves around the rim plus the ability to find teammates for easy looks. And he’s a rock-solid defender both on and off the ball. His ability to apply pressure on the ball and consistently push tempo created a lot of positive things for his team throughout the day.
Surafel Burhanie – SF Lincoln
Burhanie came out looking to score Sunday and he’s got the skills to put the ball in the hole in a lot of ways. He’s got the size and length to create looks for himself off the dribble despite lacking what might be classified as blow-by speed. He’s shifty with the ball and can slither into the paint for scores in traffic. He’s smart moving without the ball and can score off cuts, in transition or as a spot-up guy.
