Continue ReadingTy Gilbert is a point guard/shooting guard from the class of 2023. Last season, Ty played big minutes for the Grace Grizzlies and contributed lots of scoring for the team as well. He is one of the players from the state with the most potential in the class of 2023. Next season, I would expect Gilbert to help lead the Grizzlies on their journey towards a district tournament championship and a run at the state tournament. Continue reading for a breakdown of Ty’s skills and abilities ahead of the 2020-21 season.
Defense: Gilbert is a solid defender for the Grizzlies. Grace likes to set up a 3/4 court run and jump press defense and Ty often plays as one of the guards in the front. He makes great reads and has the ability to run through passing lanes and has great hands that allow him to grab a lot of steals. When guarding the ball one on one, Gilbert does a good job of keeping his man in front and takes calculated risks. Against bigs, Ty struggles at time due to a lack of strength, but that will improve in the following three seasons as he gets stronger. He crashes the boards occasionally and likes to secure rebounds to start the fast break.
Offense: Ty is a great offensive talent for the Grizzlies. He finishes really well at the rim and is consistent with both hands. He attacks the rim like a veteran and plays the game with the confidence of an upperclassman. From the perimeter, Ty is a knockdown shooter and is willing to shoot the ball in clutch moments. He has a great sense for the game and knows when to take the necessary shots. He also likes to use a mid-range jumper from time to time to put pressure on the defense and create open shots for his teammates. He is a great passer with excellent court vision and he likes to get his teammates involved as often as he can.
Overall: Altogether, Gilbert is a strong player already and will only continue to get better in the next three seasons of high school basketball. On defense, he has active hands and flies around to guard whoever he can. On offense, Ty is a gifted scorer and will continue to become more deadly as his role with the team expands.
