Sugarman is one of the leaders for the Ambrose Archers and will return for two more seasons of action at the high school level. Johnny will attempt to help the Archers grasp a district title and a run at the state tournament in a new division in the upcoming season. Continue reading for a breakdown of Johnny’s skills and abilities on the court.
Defense: Johnny is a solid defender for the Archers. He has quick reactions and is a pesky on-ball defender that plays with a lot of heart on the defensive end. He pressures to the best of his ability and is constantly in the passing lane deflecting poorly thrown passes or taking steals to the other end of the floor. He is a smart defender and uses his mental skills to force opposing guards into making poor decisions. Against bigs, Sugarman is a tough defender and forces post players into difficult shots. He has long arms for his size and contests every shot. No matter who he guards, Sugarman plays hard and forces the offense into making mistakes. Johnny is a solid rebounder and crashes the glass when he sees an opportunity for an easy rebound.
Offense: Sugarman is an excellent offensive player. He plays the game with a sense of urgency and constantly puts pressure on the defense. He has a killer crossover and a deep bag of tricks that he uses to score against any and all defenders. Johnny can knockdown a shot from the perimeter with ease, drive all the way to the basket to finish through traffic with either hand, or drill a step back from the elbow after a barrage of crossovers and spins. Along with this, Sugarman is also gifted at making excellent decisions out of the pick and roll. He finds gaps to throw pocket passes and is willing to pass to other players for open shots. One knock on his offensive game could be a tendency to over-dribble at times if he can’t get by his defender after the first move.
Overall: Johnny is the real deal and plays at a very high level. With two seasons left at Ambrose, his progression will be fun to watch and he will continue to improve as long as he stays in the gym. On defense, Sugarman is willing to successfully guard anyone and he is a threat from anywhere on offense. Sugarman would make an excellent point guard at the next level.
