One good thing about showcases like this is that some kids we’ve never seen have a chance to make a first impression. Here’s a look at some new 2023 names to keep an eye on.
Tyleik Maxwell, Frederick Douglass – Douglass has several names to watch this year and I was impressed with Maxwell on first viewing. Only a Sophomore, Tyleik is long and pretty athletic. He showed the ability to play in transition. Look for him to have a chance to impress in Lexington this season.
Jack Payne, Daviess County – Payne was also in attendance at last year’s expo and he has really grown and filled out over the last year. Jack has a reputation as a big time shooter but it was his passing that impressed me on Sunday as he made several nice assists in traffic and showed great vision.
Davis Miller, Sayre – Miller is another player from Lexington I had not seen before but came away impressed with his overall skill set. While Davis is not overwhelmingly athletic, he did show that he can move laterally well enough to stay in front. He also showed some nice touch on his shot.
Trenton Wilson, Berea – Wilson was tentative at times when I watched him but once he made up his mind to attack the rim or pull up from three, he was effective at both. Trenton should have the opportunity to have a bigger role this season for the Pirates.
Chase Wiehebrink, Eastern – Chase is another player who was at camp last year and showed well again in 2020. He’s grown since last August’s camp but is still a knockdown shooter and impressed me by diving after a loose ball and playing with a high IQ all day.
