PHI took in all of the action. Here we dive into the camp with Pangos Camp: Top Illinois 2023 Post Prospects!
Javonte Taylor Javonte Taylor 6'7" | PF Donda Academy | 2023 #41 Nation CA-S (Kenwood)
The top 2023 prospect in the state of Illinois lived up to that billing at the camp including winning MVP of the Top 30 game. This 6’8” new age face up four shined in all of his hyped matchups against either in-state or national post prospects. His versatility and ability to be a complete mismatch makes him special. Can take his man out on the perimeter going around or right by them for scores at the cup. When he needs to he uses his quickness and bounce to score in the paint. Also was effective with his second jump throughout the day getting on the offensive glass. For a big man he handles very well being able to go coast to coast like a guard. Even showed a bit of passing flair.
Davius Loury Davius Loury 6'8" | PF Phhoenix Prep | 2024 State AZ (Kenwood)
Loury was one of the top post prospects in the class coming in and he did nothing to take away from that distinction. The Simeon transfer stands at 6’7’ with a strong build. Physical four man plays with power around the hoop. Quick second jump to the glass snatching rebounds. Finishes with thunderous slams while also really improving his ability to step out and knock down a three. That area of his game continues to develop. Defensively he is a tough post defender that anchors down low and can block shots.
Donaven Younger Donaven Younger 6'8" | C Bolingbrook | 2023 State IL (Bolingbrook)
Younger is the #3 overall prospect in the 2023 class in Illinois. He had a bit of an up and down weekend going against several of the top posts in Illinois and nationally. Younger has great physical tools at 6’8” with a super athletic frame. Runs the floor with ease. Got to the rim for offensive rebound put backs and used his quickness several times inside for scores. Did miss quite a few bunnies. Can hit a mid-range shot and is a rim protector on the defensive end. Remains one of the highest ceiling prospects in the class.
Miles Rubin Miles Rubin 6'7" | PF Homewood Flossmoor | 2023 State #243 Nation IL (Homewood Flossmoor)
Rubin emerged with Chicago Lockdown and he showed again how legit he is as a prospect. The 6’7” four man brings mobility on both ends of the floor. Lefty knocked down a baseline jumper, had a spin move, and finished in the pick/roll. Little tentative at times, but he has so much upside. Quick off the floor for rebounds and has timing as one of the better shot blockers in the state.
Owen Freeman Owen Freeman 6'10" | C Moline | 2023 State #179 Nation IL (Bradley Bourbonnais)
Freeman at 6’9” is among the best post prospects in the class. Rebounded about as well as anyone we saw at the camp. High motor kid that was relentless on the boards and protecting the rim. He racked up quite a few blocks in the paint along with contesting on the perimeter against shooters. Mobility on the defensive end is going to be something that college coaches love about this prospect. Offensively he has major bounce in the paint along with touch when he needs to use it.
Jackson Kotecki Jackson Kotecki 6'9" | PF Saint Ignatius | 2023 State IL (St. Ignatius)
Kotecki had a strong second game on Saturday against another one of the best posts in the 2023 class. At 6’7” this post prospect has the ability to step out to drill a three showing off his skill. Used his power game inside with spin moves and a reverse layup. Snatched rebounds throughout and contested shots from guards and post players in the paint.
Darrion Baker Darrion Baker 6'8" | PF St Rita | 2023 State #227 Nation IL (St. Rita)
Baker really upped his stock at the Meanstreets Fall Mini Camp. Was a bit more quiet here, but there are still intriguing tools that we like long term. At 6’6” the four man has broad shoulders to add strength while maintaining his athleticism. Up and under move around the hoop was impressive as was his mobility on both ends in the paint. Also had a long outlet that was on the money.
Bakari Nelson (Brother Rice)
Listed at only 6’3” Nelson is on the smaller side, but he made up for it with his strong body and high motor. Also his long arms allowed him to play taller than his height.
Wilfred Kamukama (Huntley)
This 6’9” post burst on the radar with a strong performance at Pangos. Well-built prospect with a physical frame that finishes around the hoop. Can handle it a little in the open floor. Forces threes at times, but definitely can make them as he hit several.
Solomon Mosley (St. Rita)
Mosley is a 6’7” four man that played with a lot of energy throughout the day. He high pointed rebounds in traffic. Quick to the glass for put backs and flashed some skill around the hoop with a hook shot.
Ty Minor (Normal U-High)
Minor is a strong bodied 6’5” power forward that has an excellent frame. Can overpower weaker opponents in the paint on the glass. Has a decent skill level being able to step out and hit a three on occasion. A bit stiff in the hips limiting his athleticism. One to continue to track because there are some physical tools to like.
Kuba Senczyszyn (Dundee Crown)
At 6’5” this Dundee Crown four man can handle it as a face up four. Fouled multiple times on drives from the high-post area. Finishes with bounce around the hoop. Has some explosive athleticism.
Evan Jackson (St. Rita)
At 6’6” this is another four man to track for the Mustangs. Good athlete with long arms and has a relentless nature on the glass. Was very active around the hoop keeping balls alive.
Tyler Tharpe (Whitney Young)
Always interesting to watch athletic big men from Whitney Young. They seem to produce at least a couple of them in each class who are prospects despite having yet played on the varsity level. Tharpe has the look of another one. The 6’6” power forward has good size and length with broad shoulders to add strength. Still raw, but the athleticism should project well.
Daniel Johnson Daniel Johnson 6'6" | SF Whitney Young | 2023 State #231 Nation IL (Whitney Young)
Johnson is the more well known of these Whitney Young power forwards. Johnson made his name in several camp settings this summer/fall before transferring over to the Dolphins from Fenwick. The 6’6” wiry strong power forward is a plus athlete that can also stretch the floor on occasion with his shooting. Active rebounder that gets on the glass with a high-motor especially on the offensive end. Plus defender that can check multiple spots.
