There were so many good point guards at the Expo, in fact, that they could be divided into “KC Area” and “Kansas” groups.
Here were the top KC-area point men at the showcase (listed in alphabetical order):
Matthew De Leon, St. James:
De Leon is a pesky defender who is 6-foot and athletic. He is an established shooter who demands respect on the perimeter. He is fast and quick enough to get open shots. He’s not purely a point guard, but his ball handling and court awareness make him a fit at the spot.
Alston Mason Alston Mason 6'2" | CG Blue Valley Northwest | 2021 State KS , Blue Valley Northwest:
Plenty is already written on Prep Hoops about the 6-foot-2 stud who earned second-team 6A as a junior. He’s an elite ballhandler who wrecks defenses and creates openings for shooters. He created so many open shots for teammates at the Top 250 Expo that his teams won by margins of 30 or more points per game.
Quinten Mason Quinten Mason 6'0" | CG Olathe North | 2021 State KS , Olathe North:
Mason showed off his range and proficiency from beyond the art at the Expo Given space, he was burying 3-pointers in every game. The 6-foot Mason also demonstrated a sharp crossover that allowed him to enter the lane or create room to make plays. He kicked the ball to open shooters and facilitated the offense. He also showed he can fight for tough rebounds with the big men.
Kobe McGowan, Olathe East:
An excellent ball handler who loves to push the ball up the court and penetrate, the 5-foot-11 McGowan was good at melding with the players assembled on his team for the one-day jamboree. He got others involved and was good at looking ahead for open teammates. He has a nice crossover that helps him get where he wants to go, and he showed he could hit running shots in the lane.
Luke Williams Luke Williams 6'0" | PG Olathe South | 2021 State KS , Olathe South, 2021:
Williams was an impressive point man who stood out amongst a lot of other high quality guards. He’s 5-foot-11 and doesn’t impress with his build, but he is fearless and creative. He moves smoothly into the lane either on the drive or the cut, and finds openings all over the court. He can shoot from distance, but he’s especially good in the midrange. He has long arms and is rangy and has a knack for coming up with the ball or getting open for midrange shots.
