After the dust settled, an Elite 24 team captured the title but in an upset, the Grey team knocked off the Volt team, 69-66 in a spirited battle.
We watched a number of the Grey team’s games at the event and caught up a bit with coach Bryce Clifton. For the most part, while we were familiar with some of the names on the teams but we definitely got a better feel for these guys after seeing them play. Here are the team’s top performers on the weekend.
Note: this is not the same Grey team that competed last weekend in Utah; that team was renamed the Red team.
Peter Burke Peter Burke 6'4" | SF Tualatin | 2022 State OR (2022 Tualatin)
Burke is a versatile 6-foot-4 swingman who pretty much does it all on the court. For Elite 24, it was he that often initiated the offense at the point, utilizing ball-handling, passing skills, and a feel for the game – especially for a player of his size. Offensively, he scored at all three levels, showed specialty in the mid-range pull-up – knocking down some key ones late in the title game – but also hit some open threes and converted some tough drives. Defensively he guarded every position on the floor and was a vocal leader on both ends. According to Clifton, he was the MVP of the tournament. You can bet that we’ll be moving Burke up in the Class of 2022 rankings.
Brett Moss Brett Moss 6'4" | SG Tigard | 2021 State OR (2021 Tigard)
Moss is a rangy and athletic 6-foot-3 swingman with a high motor. He was all over the court on both ends, whether it was scrambling for a loose ball, getting in the grill of his defensive assignment, or flying in for an offensive rebound and his energy was described as an “energizer bunny” by Clifton. He knocked down open shots and also finished around the basket in acrobatic ways, and in one possession we watched, he took the ball baseline and rose up and threw down a two-handed flush over a defender.
Jake Leibelt Jake Leibelt 6'5" | PF Crescent Valley | 2022 State OR (2022 Crescent Valley)
Leibelt is a tough 6-foot-5 post/wing that is a hard worker in the paint. He had a number of tough finishes around the hoop and was tough on the glass and defensively against opposing post players. Leibelt also faced up and hit a number of jumpers out to three-point range.
Jake Wihtol Jake Wihtol 6'5" | PF Tigard | 2021 State OR (2021 Tigard)
Withol is a solid 6-foot-5 post that is also another guy who ground things out in the lane. Like Lebelt, he came in and wasn’t afraid to throw his body around and get physical, while also getting a number of buckets at the hoop. Like all of the big men on the Grey squad, Withol could also face up and shoot mid-range jumpers.
Bugsy Jensen Bugsy Jensen 6'1" | CG Churchill | 2023 State OR (2022 Churchill)
Jensen is an energetic 6-foot-3 guard who is really aggressive in his style of play. “Bugsy” switched over from the Grey (now Red) Team from last weekend and fit right into the role of providing an infectious high motor on both ends. Jensen also hit some perimeter shots.
Carson Reno Carson Reno 5'10" | PG Lake Oswego | 2022 State OR (2022 Lake Oswego)
Reno is a shifty 5-foot-10 point guard with a scoring mentality. He showed off some crafty ball-handling skills, got to the basket for drive-and-kick plays, and was able to hit some long range bombs.
Trask Peterson (2023 Tillamook)
Peterson is an all-around 5-foot-10 combo guard. He didn’t get a ton of minutes in the action we saw, but when he did play he contributed solid team ball on both ends and took good care of the basketball.
