Continue ReadingOn Saturday I was in Hayward CA to evaluate NorCal players at a Hoop Review Event. There were four teams two courts and each team had the opportunity to go up against each other. There was a good number of players who I thought played well at this event. Some of these players I’ve seen before, although there were some new faces.
C/O 2021 Guards
Juwelle Jack Juwelle Jack 6'0" | PG Vallejo | 2021 State CA-N 6’0 2021 Vallejo
Jack has a strong body and he knows how to use it. He was effective on the drive, while finishing through contact. He has good lift when he shoots 3 pointers, and mid-range jumpers. Using that same lift, he knocked down some tough shots with defenders closely guarding him. He’s an able passer. He’s aggressive on the defensive end. He’s a confident player.
Lavel Lemmons Lavel Lemmons 5'8" | PG Vallejo | 2021 CA-N 5’9 2021 Vallejo
Lemmons a speedy point guard with slick handles, Lemmons slices and dices his way to the rim mostly untouched because of his quickness, he had a number of good looking finishes that the bigs couldn’t get to. He knocked down the baseline jumper with some consistency. He has good speed and quickness hard to contain in space.
Justice Owens Justice Owens 5'9" | PG Pioneer | 2021 State CA-N 5’10, Pioneer (San Jose, CA)
Owens is an experienced point guard, he needs to hit the weights. He has good speed and quickness with the ball in his hands. He’s attacking the paint more, and he’s improved his mid range jumper, Owens has good vision and is an underrated passer. He didn’t show it at this event but Owens can get hot and knock down 3 or 4 shots before you know what hit you. A player to keep an eye on in the San Jose Area.
Sean Kennedy 5’9, Half Moon Bay
Kennedy was solid throughout this event, no flash just good solid play, he played within the flow of the game looking to take his shots when he had them, he made quality passes to teammates. He ran the floor getting several points in transition, and he hustled to get back on the defensive end. He has a good shot with 3pt range. Probably needs to get stronger and quicker.
Isaiah Frazier 6’0, Wilcox
Frazier looks to score when he has the ball. With a strong body he can withstand any contact he encounters on his drives, whether he was attacking from the top, or from the wings, he found his way his way into the key for points. He made some three’s, he gets good lift on his shot. He rebounds well for his size. Because of his strength he can guard bigger players.
Solomon Gebre 5’11, Wilcox
Gebre a slender player who plays at a good pace, he works hard to get his shots. He has an awkward release on his shot from 3 but did mange to knock down a couple from the wings, and corner. He has long arms and had some success getting his shot up in traffic over bigger players inside.
Dom D’Augusta 6’3, Los Altos
Active player who’s stronger than his wiry body indicates. He was willing to mix it up inside battling the bigger players for rebounds and going up strong on the put backs for two. He hit a couple of corner 3’s. He’s long and can defend on the wings and inside against bulkier players. He’ll rebound and run the floor.
Alex Peralta 5’11, Wilcox
Peralta did a good job of making players pay when they lost track of him. He was effective with his shots inside the key, he had some success shooting three’s. He runs the floor in transition, he works hard to stay in front of his man on the defensive end.
C/O 2021 Forwards/Wings
Nick Tumlin 6’4 Wing, California
Tumlin got off to a rocky start at this event, but settled in and started to make some shots. He’s a 3 pt shooter with good range and has a decent pullup jumper. He started to hit open shots in the corner, and wings. He rebounded to start the transition break, where he made good decisions with the ball. He was willing to mix it up some for rebounds.
George Narcisse 6’5 Forward, Valley Christion
Narcisse is big and bulky, once he improves finishes around the basket, he’ll be a more effective player on offense. On defense he can make it tough for those little guards that come into his area, he has the body to bump and bang with the big boys. He plays with good intensity, improving his touch around the basket will see his game rise.
Zach Granberry 6’6 Forward Archbishop Mitty ( San Jose)
Grannberry is a good sized player who can contribute in a big way if would become more aggressive in all phases of the game. He has good length to defend, he’s not slow, he runs the court pretty well. He was first to the floor on a couple of loose balls, he hit a 3pt shot, and he had a good number of rebounds. His fundamentals are good.
C/O of 2022 Players
Nico D’Augusta Nico D’Augusta 6'2" | CG Valley Christian | 2022 State CA-N 6’3, Wing Los Altos
D’Augusta long and wiry is stronger than he looks, he and his brother are tough competitors, they work well together on the court. Nico played good solid basketball at this event, showing a good understanding of the game and taking advantage of his opportunities. He’s a solid player on the wings who can take to the ball to the basket under control and with good balance, he’s a slasher and cutter who can wiggle his way to rim without much contact. He’s was often in good position to help on defense, and did well when guarding on the perimeter. He has good instincts.
Saige Vasser Rich 6’4 Forward, American Canyon
I Liked the length on Rich, he’s raw and will have to add some muscle. He runs the floor in transition, his long arms are active and can change some shots. He had a couple of opportunities to finish around the basket but couldn’t get it to go down. He’s more effective going up off two right now, with more footwork, and time in the gym, he could raise his stock.
Chidi Onu 6’6 Valley Christian Forward
Onu is an improving player in this class, he’ll have to bulk up a bit, but he can be an effective player in the post area. He has long arms, active, and can block or change shots if he’s in good position. He had some good looks going towards the basket, but will have to improve his efficiency around the rim. He had good outlet passes to start the break.
C/O 2023 Players
Yaqub Mir Yaqub Mir 6'3" | SG Granite Bay | 2023 State CA-N 6’0 Guard, Granite Bay
Mir appears to be progressing well at this stage, with 3 years of high school basketball to play, he’s showing me that he’s a well rounded player on the offensive end with a good set of skills. He makes good passes with the ball, he probes looking for an opportunity to attack, he makes shots more often than not. His 3pt shot is there. A player to keep an eye on.
Jaiden Paran Jaiden Paran 6'1" | PG Archbishop Mitty | 2023 State CA-N 5’11 Guard, Valley Christian
Paran is becoming a more settled player, letting the game come to him. He has the tools of a quality guard, and has improved on his decision making. His quickness, shiftiness, gives him an edge against defenders, he looks to have improved his 3pt shooting over the summer. He probably needs to bulk up a bit more.
Kenny Harper 6’1 Guard, Valley Christian
A thick bodied player showed good ability to get to the bucket, handle the contact, but had trouble finishing the play for points. He played with good effort and energy, and can be physical. A good rebounder from the guard position. I’ll see more of him.
Shea Mattox 5’11 Guard, Valley Christian
Mattox a good athlete, he’s fast on the court with or without the ball, he brings a certain level of intensity. He has a good set of handles and can create his own shot. He poses a nice mid range jumper that he was able to knock down regularly along the baseline. He makes up his mind early to attack, and uses his handles and quickness to go by defenders in the open court, and get into the paint. I’ll see more of Mattox.
