Continue ReadingWith the season only a month away, we start to take inventory of the top returning players but also need to look ahead to some players who could have a huge impact after not seeing the floor much last season. Here’s a look at some Sophomores who are ready for a bigger role in the 2020-21 season.
Meechie White Meechie White 6'3" | CG Male | 2023 State KY , Kyran Tilley Kyran Tilley 6'1" | PG Evangel Christian | 2024 State KY and Jamal Chambers Jamal Chambers 6'2" | PG Fern Creek | 2023 State KY , Male – It’s probably easier to talk about these 3 guards as a group than as individuals because 2 of the 3 are likely to start for Male on any given night with the third also being a heavy rotation player. All 3 are capable of scoring 20 on a particular night and are likely to combine to replace the production lost with the graduation of several key players for the 2020 7th region champions.
Sam Gibson Sam Gibson 7'0" | C Holy Cross | 2023 State KY , Covington Holy Cross – Gibson has the one thing you can’t teach and that’s legitimate post size. As a freshman, Sam played 14 games but is likely to be a starter or heavy rotation player this season. If he shows he can be a threat in the pick and roll, Gibson’s upside is even higher as a Sophomore.
Tylon Webb Tylon Webb 6'3" | CG Frederick Douglass | 2023 State KY , Frederick Douglass – Former coach Kurt Young told me that he regretted not getting Webb more varsity playing time last season for Douglass but Tylon should have plenty of opportunity as a Sophomore. With good athleticism and solid feel for the game, the guard could be a starter or the 6th man for a Douglass team that will be in the mix for the 11th region title.
Jack McCune Jack McCune 6'5" | SG McCracken County | 2023 State KY , McCracken County – McCracken County hasn’t been around for that long as a school but they just graduated the best player in program history and are going to be looking for the McCune brothers to elevate their games to help replace Sivills. Jack played a small role for the Mustangs last season and should have ample opportunity to step up and fill a bigger role for the 1st region powerhouse.
Kenyon Goodin Kenyon Goodin 6'3" | CG Collins | 2023 State KY , Collins – Goodin didn’t get a chance to play varsity at Butler last season but should be a starter at Collins as they start a bit of a rebuild after graduating 2 D1 signees. Kenyon has been a star on the football field for the Titans and that could be his college path but look for him to be a 12-15 point per game scorer for a team that could surprise people in the 8th region.
Jaden Biggers Jaden Biggers 6'6" | PF Bryan Station | 2023 State KY , Bryan Station – Bryan Station is a bit of a sleeper in the 11th region and if they can make the push back to the regional tournament, Biggers’ development could be a big reason why. Lexington has not had good post players for a while now and Jaden can be a matchup problem for foes if he can command double teams on offense and provide rim protection and rebounding on defense.
