Continue ReadingPlayers who can shoot the rock are needed to stretch the floor in today’s 5-out, layup or three basketball landscape. Louisiana happens to have fifteen players who are such type shooters in the class of 2021. These preps can fill it up from deep and should definitely find a home at a college or university next year.
Emareyon McDonald Emareyon McDonald 6'1" | PG Scotlandville | 2021 State LA / 6’1″ / Scotlandville
After sitting out due to an eligibility ruling last season, McDonald is ready to continue wreaking havoc on defenses in Louisiana. He knocked off the rust this summer playing in tournaments with LivOn Fleur-de-lis and displayed that range and quick release he was known for at Red River. Several Division I schools still have interest in the Hornet point guard. For a player who can stretch the floor to nearly 30 feet, I am sure someone will sign him.
Gage Larvadain Gage Larvadain 5'9" | PG Riverside | 2021 State LA / 5’10″ / Riverside
Speaking of someone who can stretch the floor, Larvadain has range that rivals McDonald’s. During the high school and the grassroots season, Larvadain has displayed true marksman ship behind the arc. Most kids say he is a walking bucket and they are right. Even at his size, he can create problems with how accurate he is from deep mixed with his quickness off the dribble. If he does not elect to play football, schools will get a knockdown shooter.
Avontez Ledet Avontez Ledet 6'3" | CG Cecilia | 2021 State LA / 6’3″ / Cecilia
Ledet is one of those shooters that surprises you when he misses. When he releases his shot, it looks like it is going in everytime. Ledet is good in catch-and-shoot or off the dribble pull up situations. He can reel off shots and points in bunches that can carry a team to victory. Going into his last season, I expect him to put up big numbers especially from deep. If he does, a school will get them a heck of a gem late in recruiting.
Bennie Amos Bennie Amos 6'0" | CG Landry-Walker | 2021 State LA / 6’1″ / Landry-Walker
Amos is not afriad to let it fly from three. He is another player that will bury shots if you leave him wide open. To be honest, players need to pick him up as soon as he crosses half court if not before. Amos shot is well for his grassroots team We All We Got (WAWG) Elite and improved his driving game. He will be an important part of a Landry-Walker team poised to be contenders for a 4A title this season.
Carter Domingue Carter Domingue 6'3" | PG St. Thomas More | 2021 State LA / 6’3″ / St. Thomas More
Domingue may not have shot as well during the grassroots season as he has in the past; however, he can definitely shoot the three. What works in Carter’s favor is he has the ability to facilitate and score. Because he can do both, defenders get caught playing off and Domingue makes them pay. Four year schools looking for a guard who can play the point and make defenses pay from deep will love what Domingue brings to the table.
Zyquarius Cowart Zyquarius Cowart 6'1" | SG Rayville | 2021 State LA / 6’0″ / Rayville
Cowart plays on one of the best teams in class 2A but flies way under the radar. However, when you look at the Rayville box score, he may lead the team in scoring. Cowart is a small guard who can guard. The corner three specialist makes threes with regularity and is often the shooter than turns a nine point lead to 15 or 18 quickly for the Hornets. Rayville may play for the 2A title for a fifth consecutive year and Cowart will be a key reason.
Dezie’l Perkins Dezie’l Perkins 6'0" | CG Madison Prep | 2021 State LA / 6’1″ / Madison Prep
Perkins is one of those shooters that can take over a game almost singlehandedly. The Madison Prep lefty takes advantage of spacing and movement in the half court to make teams pay. With Jason Perry Jason Perry 6'4" | PF Madison Prep | 2020 State LA and Elijah Tate Elijah Tate 6'3" | SF Madison Prep | 2020 State LA on the floor last season, defenses lost him at times. This year, that will not be the case. His solo, mini-runs from three will be big in Prep’s attempt to capture another title. I do not think Perkins would have it any other way.
Javari Williams Javari Williams 6'0" | CG Huntington | 2021 State LA / 6’1″ / Huntington
Wanna talk about a kid who can get hot as a firecracker…. Javari Williams Javari Williams 6'0" | CG Huntington | 2021 State LA is a flame-throwing scorer that has embraced becoming more of a shooter in the last year or so. When he plays with one or two bigs who command attention, Williams can be downright deadly. While he is a bit more streaky than the other shooters mentioned, he can put up big numbers. A college who has a good post presence will love Williams ability to stretch the floor.
Other notable 2021 shooters
Rylen Walker Rylen Walker 6'3" | SG Central BR | 2021 State LA (6’2″ / Central-BR) – Uses the three to set up his drive. Very comfortable behind the arc though.
Bryce Roberts Bryce Roberts 6'1" | CG Parkway | 2021 State LA (6’1″ / Parkway) – Roberts has a quirky release but makes plenty from deep. Has a reliable floater also.
Dylan Slaid Dylan Slaid 5'8" | CG Benton | 2021 State LA (5’9″ / Benton) – Known for his peskiness as a defender, Slaid can fill it up when hot. Tough as nails too.
Bryce Brown Bryce Brown 5'11" | CG University Lab | 2021 State LA (6’0″ / University Lab) – Part of the twin backcourt duo at Lab. Very capable corner three bomber.
David Weber David Weber 6'0" | SG Lee | 2021 State LA (6’1″/ Liberty) – Can take over a game with his shooting. Wide open threes are like layups for him.
Braxton Taylor Braxton Taylor 6'0" | SG Simsboro | 2021 State LA (6’0″ / Simsboro) – Battle-tested state champion who makes big threes. Defends well also.
Cooper Rachow Cooper Rachow 6'3" | SG Slidell | 2021 State LA (6’3″ / Slidell) – Rarely misses from deep. Not the quickest release but is very accurate.
The early signing period for seniors is November 11-18. I can foresee a couple of these players making a decision about a college or university by that time.
