Continue ReadingThe Commonwealth Basketball Group held their second session of their Fall Series at Guardian Christian Academy in Chesterfield, VA. The goal of the event was to get kids back in the gym in a grassroots setting, and provide a live steam to college coaches to be able to evaluate the talent in a structured environment.
The event had 16 teams and was loaded with talent, so doing the standouts in just one article simply isn’t possible. Here’s a look at part three of the 2021 standouts, featuring six guys to keep an eye on.
Nate Legg | 6’5” PF | Nova Cavs
The Cavs have been one of the top teams in the event, and even without some of the big names they have rode the front court duo of Legg and fellow senior Cephas Wilson-Bahun (below) to a 3-1 record so far. The won two big games against a talented CBG Wildcats and Team Assist 2.0 teams, and Legg was the most consistent guy for them. The 6’5” post plays much bigger than he is, he rebounds at a high rate and he does all of the dirty work. He’s productive and a big key to their success.
Cephas Wilson-Bahun | 6’6” PF | Nova Cavs
One thing is for sure in the Cavs run through the CBG Fall Series so far, and it’s that almost every division three coach that has come through has made Wilson-Bahun a priority and hope that he falls to them. The John Paul the Great big is a big time athlete at his size, as he makes highlight reel plays above the rim on both ends as a shot blocker, rebounder and he throws down some sick dunks too. He’s a high motor and active guy who makes big plays on both ends and brings big energy to his team as well.
Bryson Spell Bryson Spell 6'7" | PF Cape Henry | 2021 State VA | 6’8” PF | Team Assist 2.0
Spell is one of the most highly touted available prospects in the state and he showed why in his first game of the day when he went off for 22 points and 11 rebounds. Spell has always been one of the best stretch bigs and a guy who can make shots at 6’8” will always be valuable, but he showed some other stuff to his game including the ability to attack closeouts and handle and create in isolation situations. He’s improved in a number of aspects, and he looks more confident than I have seen him in a while.
Mac MacDonald | 6’3” WG | Team Assist 2.0
MacDonald is one of the top available guards in the state, and the fact that he’s a high academic guy has made him very desirable for a number of programs. While he got off to a slow start in their first game, he got it going in the second game and showed his ability to make shots from deep at a high clip, his shiftiness off the bounce and his craftiness and ability to get to the line often for easy points. He’s a smart, tough and skilled guy who can fill it up in bunches when he gets it going.
Marcus Nesmith | 6’4” WG | Hard 2 Guard
Nesmith showed in the first session that he’s an underrated scholarship level shooting specialist, and he continued that narrative in the second session with a similar showing. The fact is, Nesmith is blessed with great size for his specialty, and he knows his role and works hard to provide a positive impact within it. He works hard off the basketball to get open, he has a quick release and deep range and he’s always looking to fire it up.
Jayson Harris Jayson Harris 6'6" | PF Menchville | 2021 State VA | 6’7” PF | Hard 2 Guard
Harris is showing that he’s one of the top available prospects at any position in the state, but particularly in a position that many schools are looking for. Harris is physical, active and a good athlete at his size, so he’s able to dominate in the post on both ends. He rebounds well, can finish above the rim and he even showed a little bit of touch in the second session by stepping out and making some shots.
