The goal of the event was to get kids back in the gym in a grassroots setting, and provide a live steam to college coaches to be able to evaluate the talent in a structured environment.
The event had 12 teams and was loaded with talent, so doing the standouts in just one article simply isn’t possible. Here’s a look at part two of the 2023 and 2024 standouts, featuring five guys to keep an eye on.
Curtis Blair Jr. | 6’6” F | VA Havoc 2023
Blair saw his recruitment pick up big time this summer and was recently featured as a top 100 kid in the 2023 class in the Prep Hoops national rankings. The 6’6” hybrid forward is a guy who has great versatility, and he showed that as he is athletic enough to play in the paint and rebound, he’s skilled enough to create space and make shots and he did both at a high rate. He averaged 15.5 points per game in the first session for Havoc and will try to continue that success with Team Rocket next weekend.
Steven Stinson Steven Stinson 6'5" | SF John Marshall | 2023 State VA | 6’5” WF | Team Assist 2023
Stinson is a guy who is primed for a breakout year at Trinity Episcopal and he showed flashes of why on a stacked Assist team. The 2023 wing has terrific size and athleticism and he used it to be one of the top rebounders in the first session, and he showed his efficient scoring ability as well. He has all of the tools to be a big time prospect moving forward, and I expect him to show during his sophomore season.
Etienne Strothers Etienne Strothers 6'1" | PG Menchville | 2023 State VA | 5’11” G | Hard 2 Guard 2023
Etienne’s older brother Allen was one of the standout 2021s and picked up an offer from Troy University after the first session, but Etienne showed himself that he’s developing into quite the player himself. He’s grown a good amount over the past year and he’s still growing, he’s a guy who can shoot it from deep and he can attack and make plays for others as well. It will be fun to watch him develop moving forward.
AJ Clark AJ Clark 6'2" | SG Menchville | 2023 State VA | 6’1” G | Hard 2 Guard 2023
Clark is another young guard out of the Peninsula area in the 757 to keep an eye on, as he should be an impact guy this year at Menchville. A combo that is long, strong and athletic, Clark showed good shift throughout the event and tracks to be a good defender as well. He’s a guy that is just waiting for an opportunity to show what he can do.
Kennard Wyche Jr. | 5’5” PG | CBG East 2024
Wyche isn’t the biggest guy, but the freshman heading to Varina showed that he can boogie and isn’t afraid of playing on a big stage. He’s a highly skilled guard that can make shots, is a terrific passer and playmaker and knows the game well and is in good positions on both ends of the floor. He’ll be one to watch moving forward in Richmond as he continues to grow and develop.
