Continue ReadingSaturday I made the trip to Erlanger to watch the early part of the Camp One high school preview where 2023 and 2024 prospects went through drill work and played several games over the course of 6 hours. Here’s a look at some of the top Freshmen at the event.
Ayden Evans, North Hardin – Evans is still a little raw offensively but has tremendous size and good defensive instincts. He scored around the rim and look comfortable stretching his game past the 3 point line. His rebounding and shot blocking should be where he makes his biggest impact at the high school level but he looks like he’ll be in contention for top 3-5 prospect in the 2024 class for the next 4 years.
Ben Tshaka, Evangel Christian – One of the recent imports to Louisville, Ben is part of the young trio of bigs at Evangel this season. He’s long and athletic with growing skill around the rim and is a solid rebounder. He has potential at 6’7 or 6’8 but definitely has to keep developing to be a difference maker in Louisville.
Johnny Dejema, Evangel Christian – You can just about copy and paste anything said for Ben Tshaka above and repeat it for Johnny. They even look alike. Neither of the two have wing skills at this point but they do have plenty of time to develop them. Don’t be surprised if the Evangel front line causes a lot of problems for opposing teams.
Brady Hussey, Covington Catholic – Hussey showed a lot of offensive polish already and was at his best in drill work early. Once the games started, Brady wasn’t nearly as assertive as some of the other guards, choosing to pick his spots instead. It will be interesting to track his progress and see how much he grows but he’ll have a chance to get some minutes for Cov Cath this season.
Damone King, DuPont Manual – King has been touted as one of, if not the best, freshmen in Louisville and he backed it up on Saturday. Damone is a quick guard with a good handle who was able to get into the paint and finish. He wasn’t a consistent shooter from deep but that part of his game has time to develop.
Derrell Bateman, Christian County – A total unknown before the camp, Bateman looks like he could be the next great player for the Colonels. He has great positional size for a wing and showed the ability to bully his way to the rim while guarding multiple positions on defense. The biggest area for growth for him is going to be shot selection as he settled for long 3s far too often in the game setting.
Konner Centers, Cooper – Centers is a player who grew on me over the course of the day. He was solid in drill settings and showed a great feel and high basketball IQ in 5 on 5. In the afternoon, Konner showed he knows how to move without the ball and was one of the few campers who was consistently cutting to get open as opposed to standing and watching.
Trent Noah Trent Noah 6'7" | SF Harlan County | 2024 State #139 Nation KY , Harlan County – We won’t have a 2024 ranking until February or March but you should expect to see Trent at or near the top of the list. He can guard multiple positions and play on or off the ball. The big guard has great feel for the game and truly makes it look effortless at times the way he can elevate and score over defenders.
