With that in mind, here’s a look at some of the top guards from the big schools in Section 3
Caleb Siwek Caleb Siwek 6'1" | SG Rosemount | 2022 State MN , Rosemount
Siwek is one of the best players in the 2022 class and definitely one of the top pure scorers in the state. Rosemount improved last year thanks in large part to his development and the Irish should be even better in 2020-21 with Siwek leading the way. He’s an elite three-level scorer who can get to the rim at will, get his shot against anybody and fill it up from the 3-point line as well as anybody.
Jackson Purcell Jackson Purcell 6'4" | SF Eastview | 2021 State MN , Eastview
Purcell was a key role player for the Lightning as a junior, averaging better than seven points per game while providing perimeter shooting and defense. He’s got excellent size and length for a wing and used it to his advantage on both ends of the floor. He can finish at the rim. He can guard up or down a lineup and he’ll have a lot more opportunity to shine as a senior.
Maxsamus Wilson Maxsamus Wilson 6'3" | CG Hopkins | 2023 State MN , South St. Paul
Wilson is one of the more intriguing young talents in the state after averaging 12 points per game as a freshman. He’s a long, athletic guard who has a terrific handle and can get a mid-range bucket against just about anybody. He’s improved as a shooter and playmaker and he’ll be the go-to guy for South St. Paul this winter.
Emmet Johnson, Holy Angels
A top football prospect in Minnesota’s 2022 class, Johnson is one of the best two-way point guards in the state too. He’s a defensive menace who puts pressure on the ball, anticipates at a high level and helps all over the floor. He’s a terrific slasher who plays through contact at a high level and makes the game easier for his teammates.
Camden Holter Camden Holter 6'3" | SG Minneapolis Southwest | 2022 State MN , Holy Angels
Holter joins Johnson at Holy Angels after a sophomore season in which he averaged nearly 14 points per game for Minneapolis Southwest. He’s got great size on the wing at 6-foot-2 and can impact the game in a bunch of different ways.
Mitchell January Mitchell January 6'1" | SG Richfield | 2022 State MN , Richfield
January is one of the best point guards in the section and is the catalyst for a Richfield team that should contend for a state tournament berth again next winter. He’s got excellent speed and quickness and his ability to get into the paint and either finish or distribute makes him one of the toughest covers in the section.
Zach Longueville Zach Longueville 6'1" | PG St. Croix Lutheran | 2021 State MN , St. Croix Lutheran
Longueville stuffed the stat sheet last winter, averaging better than 18 points, six rebounds and four assists as a junior. He’s grown his game from his underclass years, evolving from a terrific knockdown shooter to a rock-solid playmaker, multi-level scorer and defender.
