Neff doesn’t have a lot of name recognition outside of Ventura County (St. Bonaventure product), but his game is worthy of it. The crafty lead guard has slick handles and hesitation dribbles that keep defenders off balance. Once in the paint, Neff scores with runners and floaters and crafty wrong-legged finishes. Neff has smooth shooting mechanics both off the catch and off the live dribble. He’s going to play college basketball at some level. It will be his on-ball defense that will dictate the level.
Tony Njia, 6-1 2021 G, Team Build Up 17u
Neff’s back court mate, Njia is a solid basketball player who does a lot of things well. He is an active, feisty defender with quick hands and feet that allow him to check the opposing team’s top guard. He rebounds well for his size, and knocks down open shots on the perimeter. He handles it well enough to be a solid secondary ball handler. He also does a good job attacking the rim from the wing or pro lane in straight lines.
Carson Frincke, 6-5 2021 W, Gamepoint 17u Select
Frincke missed most of his 11th grade year with injuries, but the sharpshooter had a solid showing this weekend. Once his feet are set, Frincke can shoot with the best of them. While not to be mistaken for a slasher, Frincke had several nice scoring drives in the opening game of the weekend, showing that is an area where he has some upside. One thing I really appreciated about his game is his effort: he didn’t take any plays off on either end.
Miles Winfree, 6-3 2021 G, Gamepoint 17u Select
Winfree has one very good skill on offense: he knocks down shots off the catch. While not a great threat off the dribble, the 6-2 combo guard has a nice stroke when he sets his feet and shoots in rhythm. He did have a couple of nice mid-range finishes and a step-back that helped his team capture the lead late in the game. Division 3 schools should monitor.
Mison Coilton, 6-2 2021 G, Lions Truth 17u
Coilton is one of my favorite players from the weekend that was. He doesn’t have the prototypical build (burly frame), Coilton’s combination of strength, feel and assertiveness allowed him to have his way for long stretches of games I watched. He is an excellent playmaker out of the pick-and-roll, and a vocal communicator on offense and defense.
Kyle Monk, 6-3 2022 G, Lions Truth 17u
Monk grew on me as the game I watched progress. His feel, passing and playmaking off of ball screens and deep (NBA) range on his jump shot all stood out. Playing up on 17s made his impact even more impressive.
