Hosted by recruiting legend Gerry Freitas, the event featured teams from Washington, California, Arizona and Idaho. It also featured several players with the unique ability to get to the rim. In this article PH takes a look at the top slashers from the event.
Donovan Dent Donovan Dent 6'1" | PG Corona Centennial | 2022 State CA-S 6’2 CG Prime 2022 (#27PHSC 2022) – Dent’s first step is amazing! I feel comfortable calling him an elite blow by player. Once in the lane he has a ton of finishes that he uses to get the ball up and over defenders.
AJ Burgin AJ Burgin 6'3" | CG San Diego | 2021 State CA-S 6’3 CG Gamepoint Elite 2021 (#24PHSC 2021) – It’s difficult to defend Burgin because he shoots it so well. Because of his strap, he takes advantage of defenders who are forced to close hard to him. Burgin can get into the lane in both half court sets and in transition. He doesn’t look like he’s moving that fast, yet he always seems to be gaining separation from defenders.
Kylo Simpson 6’3 SG 509 Elite 2021 – Simpson loved to put his head down and force his way to the rack. He has a good upper body frame, and his physique allowed him to steamroll defenders on his way to the rim. The 6’3 wing isn’t looking to beat you with jumpers, he knows what he is and does a great job of playing to his strengths.
Wayne McKinney Wayne McKinney 5'10" | PG Coronado | 2021 State CA-S 6’0 PG Coastal Slayers Elite (#22PHSC 2021) – McKinney is a nightmare in transition, but what he showed this week is that he has the ability to blow by people when closely defended in 1 on 1 situations. With his frame, once he gets his shoulders by you it’s over. I only half way joke, but I could easily see him becoming an NBA first round pick as a running back.
Tony Njia 6’1 Team Build Up 2021 – Njia isn’t really flashy but he’s efficient. He drove hard to the rim all day, showing a consistent ability to get paint touches. His first step is solid, but for the most part he simply willed his way to the rim with a combination of heart and effort.
Jeremiah Calhoun 6’3 SG Team Eleate 2022 – Calhoun played well enough this weekend to be considered a prospect on the rise. He’s a natural scorer that just knows how to attack defenders. Calhoun showed strength and enough wiggle to get to the rim repeatedly this weekend.
