While our Texas-based writers were able to catch the action live, I had to settle for watching camp and all-star games via the Baller TV livestream replays and below is my fourth set of standouts from the Top 30 Cream of the Crop game.
Chiang Ring, 2024, Minneapolis South (MN): Ring’s all-around athleticism to go along with his long and wiry 6-foot-8 frame made him one of the more impactful prospects in this event. The freshman uses all of those naturally gifted tools to show his defensive prowess as a shot blocker, rim protector and defensive rebounder. Offensively, Ring still has some work to do – as is the case for all young players – but he has a great set of hands, is quick off the floor when finishing around the basket and showed touch out to the three-point line.
Todd Jones, 2024, Isidore Newman (LA): Jones has an advanced scoring feel off the wing and really makes his mark as a transition finisher. The 6-foot-7 freshman has nice ball skills, fluidity when changing direction in traffic and uses his long strides and length to side step defenders, cover a lot of ground with limited dribbles and extend to the rim for power or finesse finishes.
Ja"Kobe Walter, 2023, McKinney (TX): Walter had a ton of good moments throughout the event, but what stood out most was how he brought great energy to the defensive end of the floor. The 6-foot-5 wing was applying consistent ball pressure, using his length to disrupt passing lanes, leading to turnovers and easy transition buckets on the other end. Walter has immense upside as a two-way wing prospect and showed comfort offensively at the mid-range level.
Layden Blocker, 2023, Little Rock Christian Academy: Blocker might have been my favorite player to watch in this event because of his all-around understanding of the point guard position. The 6-foot-2 sophomore has that vision and IQ which allows him to see the game one or two steps ahead of his opponents and it results in him dishing timely and accurate passes to his teammates. Blocker tossed a handful of pin-point lob passes and advanced the ball on the break. Offensively, Blocker has a quick crossover and a crafty spin move to get to the rim to finish.
