PrepHoops' post-summer update to the 2023 Texas Rankings was released last week and now we will take a look at the top 10 prospects in the 2023 class from the San Antonio-Metroplex. Each of these players made a noticeable impact during the grassroots circuit this summer or for their respective high school varsity squads during their freshman year last season.

Top 5 Evaluations

[player_tooltip player_id="892136" first="Kendrick" last="De Luna"] | 6-9 C | Cornerstone Christian

Texas Ranking: 19

De Luna moved up into the top 20 of the Texas Rankings and is the number 2 ranked center in the state. De Luna caught the attention of D1 programs this summer earning offers from Oklahoma State, Prairie View A&M, TCU, Illinois, and Iona. A tall and slender post prospect with a good wingspan, De Luna has a strong low-post game where he plays under control and is smooth attacking the basket. Goes up strong for rebounds and battles on the boards. Very good help-side rim protector and defender, where he shows good awareness and anticipation when to slide over and contest opponents shots. Wouldn’t be surprised to see De Luna continue to rise up the rankings as he will be one of the more heavily recruited prospects for the 2023 class.

[player_tooltip player_id="892137" first="Jaylen" last="Crocker Johnson"] | 6-7 PF | Warren

Texas Ranking: 30

Strong, powerful, and active on the block, Crocker Johnson made a huge impact in the paint for Warren during his freshman season posting 6.3 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. Crocker Johnson projects as a true power forward prospect at the next level and already possesses a variety of moves to get to the basket, including spin moves and backing down opponents with his physicality and strength. A lefty who finishes through contact and can finish with either hand. Crashes the boards extremely hard and is a force on offensive rebounds. Shows good athletic ability on defense with showing on the pick-and-roll out on the perimeter, as well as being a rim protector in the paint.

[player_tooltip player_id="1039603" first="Zayden" last="High"] | 6-6 PF | Smithson Valley

Texas Ranking: 37

The biggest riser from Central Texas in our 2023 Texas Rankings is Smithson Valley stretch-forward [player_tooltip player_id="1039603" first="Zayden" last="High"], who had a breakout freshman season last year. High averaged 10.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.1 blocks, and 1.0 steals per game for the Rangers while hitting on 34% of his shots from beyond-the-arc. Still growing into his frame, High has the potential and versatility to play either forward position but could grow into a stretch-four due to his ability to shoot the ball. Showed good defensive range and blocking ability with Smithson Valley, due to his great athletic ability and length.

[player_tooltip player_id="787355" first="Santiago" last="Ochoa"] | 6-4 PG | Antonian College Prep

Texas Ranking: 40

The top guard prospect in the San Antonio area for the 2023 class, Ochoa is a playmaker from the point guard spot and is a smooth scorer who can get to the rim at will. At 6'4", Ochoa has great size for the position for the next level and will continue to add strength to his frame. Ochoa was very impressive in his play with Antonian during his freshman season and continued his progression with the HD Toros this summer on the grassroots circuits, including averaging nearly 20 points per game at Labor Day GASO in Houston last month. Plays under control with smooth handles, and is a savvy finisher at the basket who also possesses a nice euro-step move. Has improved on his three-point shot and has extended range on his jumper.

[player_tooltip player_id="892140" first="Matthew" last="Soto"] | 5-10 PG | Somerset

Texas Ranking: 47

A quick point guard with deep range shooting ability, Soto is rising up the ranks and is one of the top guards in San Antonio for the 2023 class. Soto can beat defenders several different ways on offense but is particularly lethal with his three-point shot where he has extended range on his shot. He possesses the ability to be a knock-down shooter, catch-and-shoot weapon, or a pull-up artist who can hit shots with a hand in his face. When he's not knocking down deep-range shots, he shows that he can get into the paint and finish with a nice floater, but he also does a really good job of using his vision to drop off easy passes to open teammates. Soto is also a skilled passer who shows good accuracy and zip on his dimes.
