NorCal had a good number of 2023 guards who performed well. BallerTV has allowed me to take a closer look at NorCal players. While there’s more to evaluate, here’s a quality group of guards, who I thought performed well.
King -Jhsanni Wilhite 6’0 Guard 2023, Archbishop Riordan (San Francisco, CA)
Wilhite one of the top point guards in NorCal in his class 2023. At this event, he showed a quality skill-set, an ability to constantly beat the defender off the dribble from different angles, a good jump shot and an ability to score points. He’s hard to deal with in the open court, he had quality passes, and showed he can be a quality on ball defender.
Jermaine Haliburton Jermaine Haliburton 6'2" | PG Inderkum | 2023 State CA-N 6’0 Guard 2023, Parkway (Sacramento, CA)
The first thing I noticed with Haliburton is his quick hands on the defensive end, he got several deflections playing the passing lanes, and applied good ball pressure. He’s speedy and bouncy, that works for him on both ends of the court. He’s a good skilled player, who played under control, had good shot selection, and knocked down the open shot. He moved the ball pretty well. He’s on Wright’s watch list.
Colton Dukes Colton Dukes 6'1" | SG Atwater | 2023 State CA-N 6’1 2023 Guard, Atwater (Atwater, CA)
Dukes is a basketball player, yeah he needs to get stronger, and faster, that doesn’t takeaway the fact that he played good basketball at this event. He has fundamentals, he made good decisions with the ball. Dukes had good drives from the wing to the paint, ran the floor both ways in transition, he got to his spots, knocked down jumpers, and hit a couple of threes. He’s a good help defender, and willing to help out on the boards. He’s on Wright’s watch list.
Jaiden Paran Jaiden Paran 6'1" | PG Archbishop Mitty | 2023 State CA-N 5’11 2023 Guard, Valley Christian (San Jose, CA)
Paran a slick handled point guard, shifty and speedy played at a good pace. He showed good patience, was calm, as he picked his spots to show what he can do. He has improved his shooting from the three point line, he had a couple nice in the flow three point shots that went in for him. He has good ball skills and we should see improved play at the point guard position.
Mateo Jackson 5’11 2023 Guard, Castro Valley (Castro Valley, CA)
Jackson played well in his 3 games at this event. He’s an athletic guard with good handles, he changes speeds well, creates his own shot off the dribble using a quick first step. He hit the mid-range jumper and a couple of threes. He has good court vision, and delivered quality passes. Jacksons speed in the open court was noticeable, it makes him a threat whenever he has the ball. He’ll defend. He on Wright’s watch list.
Josiah Johnson 5’9, 2023 Point Guard, Sheldon (Sacramento)
Johnson was at this event two weekends ago. The strong muscular guard is proving himself to be a disruptor for any body he’s guarding. Johnson standing at 5’9 is a physical defender who bumps and bangs the bigger players in half court, has the strength and lateral speed to stick close on defenders full court. He’s more of a pass first guard, but make no mistake he can get a bucket with his physical style of play.
Ahmaree McCullough 5’9, 2023 Point Guard, Saint Joseph Notre Dame (Alameda, CA)
NorCal had quite a few quality point guards from the class of 2023 who showed up in Utah. McCullough is one of them. A good on ball defender with lateral speed and toughness to make things difficult for opposing teams ball handlers. He has quickness, solid handles, and toughness to absorb any hits on his way to the basket. He shows good speed pushing it up the court.
Donovan Cooks 6’0 Guard 2023 Dublin (Dublin, CA)
Cooks a solid body with good handles, and willing to make the pass. I’m not sure if he’s a point guard. I do know that he is well equipped physically to get a bucket on his own if the opportunity presents itself. At this event he showed some ability to get to the hoop, he showed decent form on the jumper. He’s a good on ball defense. He’s on Wright’s watch list.
