With that being the case, it’s the most opportune time to begin previewing players who should experience breakout seasons in 2020-21. We’ve already taken a look at over a handful of guards who should enjoy standout junior seasons. Now, we move onto the wing prospects.
Cameron Whitmore Cameron Whitmore 6'7" | PF Archbishop Spalding | 2022 State #30 Nation MD | Archbishop Spalding
Whitmore has a strong argument to be the top overall prospect in the DMV as things stand today. When you consider his size at 6-foot-7, elite athleticism and his skillset that has improved at a rapid rate, you have the makings for a possible blue blood prospect. Whitmore will look to lead a Spalding team surrounded by quality talent to the MIAA and BCL mountaintop.
Christian Watson Christian Watson 6'6" | SF St. John's | 2022 State #121 Nation MD | St. John’s (DC)
Watson will take on a much bigger role for St. John’s this season. He’ll take the reigns from Ish Leggett (Rhode Island) and be depended upon to be a playmaker on the perimeter for both himself and others. The 6-foot-7 wing had impressive showings throughout playing in the I-95 League for Team Durant 16U and I’d expect that level of play to translate into making the Cadets a tough out once again in the WCAC.
Darren Buchanan Jr. Darren Buchanan Jr. 6'7" | PF Woodrow Wilson | 2022 State #101 Nation MD | Wilson
Buchanan witnessed his stock rise significantly this summer and for good reason. He is 6-foot-5 and plays with brute strength that allows him to finish with regularity around the rim through contact. He’s becoming more comfortable off the bounce and is a versatile option on the defensive end given his size and mentality. The Tigers will lean heavily on Buchanan for production and he should have no issue shouldering the load.
Noah Batchelor Noah Batchelor 6'6" | SF IMG Academy | 2022 State #184 Nation FL | Glenelg Country
Batchelor is coming off a productive summer helping Team Thrill 17U to an undefeated schedule. The 6-foot-7 wing took big strides as a defender and made it a point to focus on staying locked in at that end against high level competition. Batchelor scored with efficiency from all three levels, which is a part of his game that has never been doubted. If Glenelg Country plans on making any sort of push in the MIAA, it’ll be because Batchelor is carrying them through.
Tyrell Ward Tyrell Ward 6'7" | SF DeMatha | 2022 State #56 Nation MD | DeMatha
The Stags have reloaded and are once again in position to be a powerhouse not only in the DMV, but the entire country. The dynamic scoring option they have in Ward will be a big reason why. The long-limbed wing put on at least 10 pounds of muscle this summer, which will benefit him in finishing strong at the basket as well as the defensive end when he guards more physical wing players.
CJ Scott CJ Scott 6'4" | SF Archbishop Spalding | 2022 MD | Archbishop Spalding
Scott is such an intriguing prospect because of his ability to impact the game in multiple ways. He’s a top prospect in the Baltimore area that fits the ’swiss army knife’ mold and when he’s playing well, it usually leads his team to blowout wins. This season for Scott consistency will be a huge factor for Spalding reaching their potential. It’ll also have a huge impact in whether or not his recruitment picks up.
Travis Roberts Travis Roberts 6'5" | SG Bishop Walsh | 2022 State MD | Bishop Walsh
Roberts impressed in the I-95 Coalition League throughout his play with Prospect U 17U. The 6-foot-5 wing is a talented shot maker who can fill it up in a hurry. From June 15 to now, he’s generated six Division I offers from the likes of Bryant, Fresno State, Georgetown, San Diego State, Southern Utah and Witchita State. Look for Roberts to carry over his success from the summer into his junior season with Bishop Walsh.
Masai Troutman Masai Troutman 6'5" | SF St. Andrew's | 2022 State MD | St. Andrew’s
Two months after receiving his first offer from Bryant, Troutman began garnering high major interest and eventually received offers from the likes of Florida, Georgetown and Indiana. The 6-foot-4 wing announced over the summer that he would transfer from St. John’s Catholic Prep to St. Andrew’s, a move that will give him a more challenging scheudle against high level competition. Troutman possesses explosive athleticism in the open floor, is a capable shot maker from mid-range and three, all while being a viable defensive option for multiple positions. It’ll be interesting to see how he fits in at his new school this winter.
