Here is a look at some of the Wichita-area bigs who were the top risers this summer (in alphabetical order and with club and high school listed):
Wade Myrtle, B2B Elite 16U, Wichita Heights:
Wade is a 6-foot-6 rising sophomore. He had to run to keep up with his lightning-fast teammates this summer, and that sure helped his ability to play at the varsity level. He polices the lane and looks to block shots. He is a solidly built post who can catch on the run and score in the lane.
David Oyana, Oz Elite 2023 – Red, Sunrise Christian:
One of the most physically imposing specimens in the summer circuit, Oyana is still developing. But as his game catches up to his 6-foot-11 body, look out. This rising sophomore has been exposed to some elite talent, and is getting some top-notch coaching.
Nate Purkey, Wichita Padres, Eisenhower:
Purkey is just 6-foot-2, but he knows how to play in the lane. He can post up, using his solid build, works hard on the glass, and is a battler. He can do a lot, including bringing the ball up the court, driving from the wing and shooting with range. But his size and skill in the lane warrants his spot on this list.
Henry Thengvall, Mid Kansas, Kapaun:
The 6-foot-5 Thengvall is a versatile and athletic big. He can dribble, drive and shoot. He has size and strength and is a force in the lane, particularly going after rebounds.
Keaton Williams, Perry Ellis 34, Kapaun:
Williams will give Kapaun a ton of size. At 6-foot-8, he’s more like a traditional post. He moves well for his size, and focuses on blocking shots and scoring in the lane. He moves around well and sets screens at the offensive end. He’s a force on the defensive end because his agility allows him to get in position to block shots.
