But who are the Wichita-area players who will add their names to that list this coming fall?
Here is a look at some of the Wichita-area guards who were the top risers this summer (in alphabetical order and with club and high school listed, as well as grad class):
Makel Carter, Oz 2023, Wichita SE, 2023:
Carter made a splash on the Oz 2023 team with his dynamic ball handling. The rising sophomore has the ball on a string and can break down a defender with his crossover. He can drive and shoot pull-up jumpers in the lane. On defense, he gets after opposing point guards end to end. He is aggressive, playing to make steals in the passing lane.
Isaac Combs, Wichita Padres, Kapaun, 2023:
The hard-driving Combs plays with intensity. He draws fouls by getting into the lane when he isn’t scoring or finding an open shooter. But he’s equally dangerous shooting from beyond the arc. The 5-foot-9 guard has quick hands on defense and is very disruptive.
Chase Harris, B2B Elite, Wichita Heights, 2023:
The rising sophomore is an elite penetrator and scorer. At 6-foot-2, he has the size to get a shot off in the lane, and he has the quickness and ball handling ability to get to an opening. Even on a talented B2B Elite team, Harris stood out. His athletic ability allows him to play at top speed and destroy defenses.
Geremiah Moore Geremiah Moore 5'9" | CG West | 2022 State KS , Team Perry Ellis 34, Wichita Northwest, 2022:
Moore showed his ability to quarterback a talented team this summer. He keeps his eyes up, finds open shooters and leads the break effectively. He is a pass-first point guard, but he can shoot from beyond the arc as well. His physical stature allows him to battle in the lane, and he’s a factor on the glass.
Joseph Recalde, Wichita Padres, Independent, 2023:
Recalde teamed with Combs to form a lightning-quick guard tandem this summer. He’s a deft ball handler who can create his own shot. He likes to loft floaters in the lane over taller defenders, and he frequently draws fouls on the drive. He looks like he knows how to direct an offense and handle defensive pressue.
Marcus Ziegler, Team Perry Ellis, Wichita Heights, 2023:
A 6-foot-1, long-armed point guard, Ziegler loves to use his crossover to break down a defender. He can create his own shot opportunities, or break through a defense to find an open shooter. His size makes him a tough rebounder, and he’s always looking to make a steal at the defensive end.
