Continue ReadingYesterday we released our updated 2022 player rankings after what was an unprecedented spring and summer. Even though majority of college coaches were unable to get into the gym, us scouts here at Prep Hoops Maryland tried to be active as possible getting our eyes on the prospects in this area that is often referred to as a hotbed for collegiate talent.
Who were the players who boosted their stock the most? Let’s take a look.
Masai Troutman Masai Troutman 6'5" | SF St. Andrew's | 2022 State MD | 6’4 | St. Andrew’s/Team Takeover
Previous ranking: 59
Current ranking: 21
Troutman exploded up the rankings after a solid sophomore season at St. John’s Catholic Prep where he contributed in a multitude of ways. Ironically, even though we didn’t have live evaluations this spring and summer, it was when his stock really took off the most. Programs are intrigued by his length, sneaky explosive athleticism and versatility on both ends. He can make defenses pay from three and has established himself as an above the rim threat whenever he puts the ball on the floor. Troutman, who will suit up for St. Andrew’s this winter, has offers from the likes of Bryant, Florida, Georgetown and Indiana.

Deon Perry Deon Perry 5'8" | PG Mt. Carmel | 2022 State MD | 5’9 | Mt. Carmel/Team Melo
Previous ranking: 33
Current ranking: 22
There was no doubt that Perry had the skill set to be considered a top-25 player in the area prior to the rankings update, but this summer he showed us exactly what we needed to see in specific aspects. For his Mt. Carmel team, Perry is depended upon as a primary scorer to lead them to wins. When he took the keys to a Team Melo squad supplemented with an array of player who can put the ball in the basket, Perry’s true point guard skills came to light. He commands the floor in the half court and makes sound decision in the open floor to get his teammates easy looks. All while still being a major threat with the ball in his hands as a scorer. Some programs will hesitate because of his size and while they may be right to do so, there’s no overlooking the production and potential he has as a floor general.
Jordan Nkoa-Abessolo Jordan Nkoa-Abessolo 6'5" | PF St. Maria Goretti | 2022 State MD | 6’4 | St. Maria Goretti/Team Thrill
Previous ranking: 66
Current ranking: 23
Abessolo took advantage of playing in front of important scouts and coaches this summer for Team Thrill 16U. What comes to mind immediately when thinking of his game is his endless motor. He’s a big undersized for the four position, but his hustle and strength help mask his lack of height. He also has a quick first jump and plus athleticism to help secure boards and contest shots around the rim. To be honest, I’m not sure if he should’ve made this high of a jump in the rankings, as I’d still like to see a more developed offensive skill set but here at Prep Hoops Maryland it is a three-person committee and he obviously showed signs of intriguing potential.
Rob Lawson Rob Lawson 5'9" | PG National Christian | 2022 State MD | 5’9 | Archbishop Carroll/Team Durant
Previous ranking: 78
Current ranking: 25
Lawson was another smaller guard who really took advantage of the stage this spring and summer with Team Durant 16U. At 5-foot-9 he’s lightning quick and packs elite athleticism for his size. He commanded the floor well and made sound reads in ball-screen scenarios. Lawson is more of an aggressive scorer for the position and he did so at an efficient clip from all three levels. Defense was always an area we thought highly of Lawson with his relentless pressure and ability to anticipate accurately. All of this was why he made the biggest jump in our ranks from no. 78 to no. 25.

Preston Howard Preston Howard 6'5" | PF McDonogh | 2022 MD | 6’5 | McDonogh/Team Melo
Previous ranking: 46
Current ranking: 26
I missed out on Howard mightily this past high school season as he was sidelined with injuries, so I was glad to see him back out on the hardwood this summer playing with a talented Team Melo group. Howard, who is also a highly sought after recruit as a quarterback, gives many reasons to like his game with the versatility he can bring from the four spot. He’s a strong finisher around the basket who embraces contact, can guard multiple position on the defensive end and has the athleticism to challenge attempts above the rim. One thing I’ll need to see from Howard before totally buying into this ranking is his composure. He tends to let the intensity of the game get to him. While I’m all for a little trash talk, you can’t let it impact your production in a negative way and become foul prone. As Howard matures and realizes how important he is to his teams, I’m certain that concern will take a backseat
Travis Roberts Travis Roberts 6'5" | SG Bishop Walsh | 2022 State MD | 6’5 | Bishop Walsh/Prospect U
Previous ranking: not ranked
Current ranking: 32
Roberts burst onto the rankings list after catching eyes throughout the spring and summer. At 6-foot-5, he has great size as an off-ball guard who can really shoot the ball from three. He continues to develop his confidence off the bounce, but has shown glimpses of becoming dynamic in that area as well. He poses nice athleticism that makes him a threat in the open floor and consistently fills the lanes wide to make himself available for a number of options. Roberts holds offers from Bryant, Fresno State, Georgetown, Southern Utah and Witchita State.
