Oregon Prospects 2022 was a squad comprised of the top juniors and sophomores in the state and they strung together an impressive 4-1 record in the event. Here’s a look at their top performers:
Lamar Washington Lamar Washington 6'4" | CG AZ Compass Prep | 2022 State #128 Nation AZ (2022 Jefferson)
We’re going to say it right now – there’s no reason in our opinion why Washington shouldn’t be a nationally Top 100 ranked player. We may have only seen three of the team’s games, but the way the 6-foot-4 guard dominated the competition we wouldn’t be surprised if he was the best player in the gym. There was simply no way to defend Washington as every part of his offensive game was clicking from hitting threes, creating off the dribble for himself or others, or finishing at the rim – with his baseline drive and slam over an opponent in one game becoming a viral video on social media. Washington used his quick hands to create havoc on defense, helped out on the boards, and pretty much did it all for the Prospects.
Jackson Shelstad Jackson Shelstad 6'0" | PG West Linn | 2023 State #55 Nation OR (2023 West Linn)
This was Shelstad’s second weekend of live action since the high school season – he played in Arizona the previous weekend – and from the jump he showed no signs of rust. His jumper was smooth as silk as he exploded for 25 points and he confidently took the ball to the hoop and drew contact. He pushed the ball up the floor effectively and the defending 6A steals leader created more opportunities with his ball-hawking ability on D. Things were a little quieter for the clearly physically stronger 5-foot-11 guard in the other two games we watched, but we heard from a coach on site that his other two games were rock solid.
Marquis Cook Marquis Cook 6'6" | SF AZ Compass Prep | 2023 State #6 Nation AZ (2023 Jefferson)
Having seen Cook play with this group on the Prospects for a few tournaments now, it seems that he’s more comfortable being a “blender” on this squad rather than a featured offensive player. That’s fine and dandy for the 6-foot-7 swingman as the team has benefited from his ability to utilize his length and athleticism on the boards and on defense, where he had a couple of highlight reel blocks. Offensively his jumper wasn’t falling but he had some strong finishes in the paint.
Luke Johnson Luke Johnson 6'8" | PF Central Catholic | 2022 WV (2022 Central Catholic)
Johnson didn’t really have anything run for him on offense but yet he was effective, simply by playing hard, fighting for offensive boards, and running the floor which made him available for fast break opportunities. The 6-foot-8 forward as usual was very aggressive on the glass and on defense and didn’t back down from anybody. Offensively he did get a few chances to show off his perimeter shooting and knocked down some face-up jumpers.
Max Von Arx Max Von Arx 6'5" | PF Grant | 2022 State OR (2022 Grant)
von Arx split time with the Oregon Prospects Black squad and for the 2022 group, largely provided depth along the frontline. As usual he showed a good motor, fought hard against bigger opponents, used his length to block a few shots, and played solid team ball.
Kahlil Singleton (2022 Fort Vancouver)
Like von Arx, Singleton split time with the Black squad to help them with backcourt depth. The Vancouver standout didn’t get a ton of offensive opportunities, but strongly attacked the basket off dribble drives, knocked down a few jumpers, and got some more experience playing lead guard.
Ray Ray Bergersen (2022 Borah)
The son of Oregon Prospects 2022 coach Roberto Bergersen, the younger Bergersen settled in at point guard and showed that he had a steady hand. He did a good job of setting up teammates for scores and knocking down open threes while also showing courage at driving into the lane and drawing contact.
Cameron Andre-Covington Cameron Andre-Covington 6'9" | PF Columbia Christian | 2021 State OR (2021 Columbia Christian)
Andre-Covington is currently listed as a member of the Class of 2021 but he’s young for his grade and there’s talk of him reclassifying to 2022. At 6-foot-9, long, and athletic he will always garner attention the moment he walks into the gym. He got limited time but was able to contribute on the glass.
